  • Guitar players?

Guitar players I need some advice. My wife got me a fender acoustic guitar for Christmas. I've never played before. What do you think is the easiest way to learn? DVD, books, or lessons? Any recommendations appreciated.

      Re: Guitar players?

I would get a good cord book, that show all the major/minor cords, so you can at least get a feel for rhythm and possible a good beginner instructional book, that goes over how to play the guitat basics like frets, cord progression, the strings and key ( like what string is E, G, D A, and the sharps and flats in the keys). Melbay, use to make good instructional books, starting with the first beginners, up to more advanced books. I would also implement a good guitar teacher in the genre in which your most interested in. There are alot of things the books just do not go over, but a magazines like "Guitar Player" can help, as some will give you riffs you can try out. Soo many techniques in guitar..like progressive, latin, rock..etc..Of course practicing and listening to songs that have alot of guitar in them will help alot..There are may guitar players that are just self taught..Stat off with just going to a good music store that sells good instructional books and a good cord book. You will need how to tune a guitar as well, and the beginner books should do over that. I have a tuner, to get the perfect pitch for each string, although i have a good ear..but I will use it, just to make sure its perfect. Hope this helps.

I 2nd the book. I just started last year and it's a little tougher than I thought it would be. I have taken a few lessons which really help because it helps you much more with the rhythm. You can also find free tabs online that teach you songs. I would also buy a digital tuner. They are pretty cheap and easy to use.

My biggest struggle is moving between chords with no hesitation in the beat.

          Re: Guitar players?

major playah her, decades till neck surgeris, played in tons of clubs many bands yada yada yada

          practice does make perfect

and how u practice is how u will play

you're individualized learning style will determine you're progress

you're goals will determine you're journey

so, what are you're goals, short medium and long term

are u visual, auditory or kinesthetic learner

          or combination

imho, a year one should go something like this

set weekly practice times based on what u can handle time wise, even 3 twenty minute sessions u can progress if you practice correctly

work up too practicing complete pieces of music, mary had a little lamb, happy birthday, etc.

singing a song while practicing helps immensely,

          find others too play with

progressively build up you're reptoire of songs

like tn says, digital tuner a must, and a metronome

for me, just as an example, i'm extremely visual, so if someone showed me, i could pick it up easily, if i had a feeling for it, i used alot of videos just cause they were cheap and easy

finding a teacher that is excellent is a job in itself, i had half a dozen over the years

looking back the main thing i would have done different is have had my teacher hook me up with other of his students on a similar level to play play play

now, not to get negative, playing in public and playing with others is where the cherry on the ice cream is...............it's the differece between mma in the gym and in the ring, it's not a whole nuther level, it's a whole nuther world, the allure is it is very orgasmic, lol

if ur long term is too stick with acoustic, too play 80% of all music u have ever heard, progress up too getting a cappo and playing with ur fingers versus a pick

          good luck

Appreciate it. I will play mostly country. Not looking to get on stage, just mess around at home. She got me a digital tuner with it.
