Wife's psychology homework...

Check this out. My wife came home with this assignment and asked me to help. Her teacher said that only a genius could figure out every answer without help.....me being me, I took that as a challenge. I got 9 out of 12. Two of the ones I missed didn't make sense and 1 I would have never gotten because I just wouldn't have gone with that train of thought. Here it is:


1. The maker doesn't want it, the buyer doesn't use it, and the user doesn't see it. What is it?

2. What number is next in this series: 10, 4, 3, 11, 15, ___? Choose from the following: 14, 1, 17, 12

3. What is so unusual about the following sentence: Jackdaws love my big sphinx of quartz?

4. Something extraordinary happened on the 6th of May, 1978 at 12:34pm. What is it?

5. What occurs once in every minute, twice in every moment, but never in a thousand years?

6. A man left home one morning. He turned right and ran straight ahead. Then he turned left. After a while he turned left again, running faster than ever. Then he turned left once more and decided to go home. In the distance he could see two masked men waiting for him. Who are they?

7. Can you translate the following: YYURYYUBICURYY4ME

8. Day is to night as yes is to ________ (choose from the following: perhaps, no, maybe, if).

9. Dog is to puppy as cat is to ________ (choose from the following: mouse, dog, rat, kitten).

10. Man is to blood as trees are to _______ (choose from the following: leaves, branches, sap, water).

11. H is to C as Q is to _____ (choose from the following: P, M, L, N).

12. Point is to line as line is to ____ (choose from the following: surface, curve, dot, solid).

No. He said if you get them all then you are a genius. I don't think it's a pass or fail thing. Here is what he said:

This is an assignment that I strongly encourage you to seek help from your classmates (use email, the discussion board), friends, and family. You will NOT be able to answer these by yourself unless you are a genius who's also very creative. This assignment should be fun and if you utilize classmates, friends, and family you should be able to answer most if not all of the questions. You may want to try and answer some of these on your own first just to see how creative you are. Good Luck and have fun!!!!!

These sorts of mind challenging tests are not a good indicator of intelligence in my opinion. People's minds think differently, and who's to say one perception is better than another. For instance, in my mind number two should have been 16, because the second number, 4, is less than the first number, 10, then the third number 3, is one less than the third number, 4. The way I perceive it the fifth number, 15, is greater by one than the fourth number, 11, which to me should make the last number 16, thus greater by one than the previous number. That is how I see the order of those numbers, but the answer is the inverse. Some of the other questions were definite answers, and challenging for sure. Conversely, numbers 8 - 12 were easy and not challenging at all, except for 12 somewhat. Fun mind game no less.

I don't think there is a concrete right or wrong on some of these. That is the creative portion of the exercise. The intelligence doesn't come from getting the "correct" answer but rather coming up with a creative answer that you can justify. The answers I posted were the ones I came up with. I googled these as well and the ones I posted were the most common answers. I am sure that some of these questions can have multiple answers.

I mistyped on my explanation of number 2. Basically I was saying that the second number was higher than the first one, then the third number was one lower than the second one. The fifth number was higher than the four one, so I see the sixth number needing to be one higher than the fifth one. That is how I see the order. 10, 4, 3, 11, 15, ?. If 10 is followed by a decreasing value of 4, and then 4 decreases by one to 3, then 11 starts a new cycle which is followed by an increasing value of 15, and so I believe the next number should follow sequence by increasing by one to 16.

Those tests are fun to take. They are good brain exercisers. As for genius, well, there are many forms of genius and I am sure there are geniuses who flunked that test.

As for IQ tests, ,my opinion are that they are bunk! How can written words in a man made test determine just how smart a person is? How p0werful a persons mind is can't be measured by a question and answer test. I know a guy who can design a car, make the car in the garage and with NO instruction manual..Its all in his head!!!! and He would probably fail miserably on an IQ test. Those standardized exams they give to school kids are also BUNK! If the teacher knows a kid did poorly on those tests, that teacher is going to treat that kid according to his text score...that is WRONG!

I agree, but some of these types can be fun mind games, but nothing that prove someone's intelligence. The kind of intelligence that matters is the kind that drives you to succeed and make good decisions in life. That is all that matters. Standardized tests are one of the problems with our schools today. Then, when scores are low, the federal education system merely lowers the standards. That is what the basis of the No Child Left Behind is. It was a terrible program and plan from the beginning. They just lowered the standards to make our country appear better educated, when in fact they made students dumber. This is also why I don't believe the federal government should be involved in the education system. Ever since the government has increased its control over education, the students have become less educated. Eventually students will come out of school with no understanding of anything except how to work for a big company or the government, and with no idea of entrepreneur type talent. The dumbing down of America is what I call it.
