HELP. possible scam

i'm sure this is some kind of scam.
my wife responded to an add on craigs list looking for a personal assistant. she sent her resume and was contacted, by email, by the guy. he claimed that out of all the resumes he recieved hers was the best. he introduced himself as RAY DESMOND. he claimed he was in finance and home loans, also sat on boards of charity's and ophanages...claimed he spent alot of time in England and needed a personal assistant over here to line up flights and take care of personal matters over here. (i dont even know where this guy lives in the states, just UNITED KINGDOM as an addy. he claims he's gonna pay her 500 a week for her services and it can all be done from home. if she would like, she can still get another job, but his intrest's must come first so keep that in mind while job hunting. so...he claims, today, that he's sending her a package, UPS, with a certified check thats to be cashed and the money to be sent over night deposit via westurn union..."take your 500.00 for this week out of it". he told her to cash it at her bank or a check cashing place.....why the fuk didnt he just send the money to the orphanage? the name she's supposed to send the western union too is RUBEN JOSEPH.
she told him in a previous email that she was not intrested in the position and she still gets this today. he also had asked in the past if she was good at posting ads, like the one she answered, in other states...WTF???

All I know is that just about every over seas scam I have heard of involves Western Union. I would say almost 100% that is a scam and to stay away.

ok..the package came. here was his directions...recieve the package, cash the check at your bank or a check cashing place and remit the money, minus your 500, to an adress in newyork where this guy will bring it too the orphange...when we looked at the sending adress, its for NEW JERSEY....ok...your gonna over night a package to michigan, from new jersey so we can cash it and send it to new york...you couldnt send it to new york yourself? oh yea...this is all on the up and up...riiiight....fukhead!!!

we didnt take the pack...the driver (he's our regular guy) said that these are getting around more and more...he is turning it into loss pervention.
i figured it was a scam, i just couldnt see the angle. if the check cashed AND WAS LEGIT, i dont see how it would hurt us...other than WHERE the money could have came from

That's the oldest scam in the book bro. I've seen it and prevented it a million times at the bank.
For starters, the check is a fake. For an example, we'll say the check is $4000. You will take the check, and cash it against your account, which makes you liable for the check. You take the money, then forward your legitimate money to the "Orphanage" (it's usually a Nigerian dude who is waiting to cash your legitimate check 2 minutes after he receives it). Once the check is cashed, you are screwed. Because once the fake bank check is discovered as a fake, they pull the full $4000 amount out of your bank account. Now my friend, you are stuck $4000.

Wow! I bet most people never knew that they would be held accountable with their personal money for something like that. I did some research on a scam a while back and it was pretty much the same outcome. I saw something on television or read something about these scams. They have groups of people say from India, that sit around ALL day and come up with these scams and then try to scam Americans out of money. That is why most don't ask for outlandish amounts of money....a little money here, goes a long way there!

this is actually what i thaught it was but it had a little different trwist wiht the "cash it at a check cashing place" and sending the money to new york and the check came from new jersey....i thaught...thats way too fuked up to EVER work!! how can anyone fall for this? it seemed too stupid to be a scam...i mean seriously...from new jersey? you could send the check straight to new york? wtf??

If you take it to a check cashing place, you will get the same outcome. The check cashing place will take your ID and write it on the check. When the check comes back as bad, the check cashing place will forward you to a collection agency, that will report it to your credit bureau. And you will have to pay it off eventually. The purpose of them asking you to take it to a check cashing agency is it takes a few days longer for the check to be returned. So it buys the bad guys more time for their get away.

A check is a contract. Once you accept the check, or "contract", the burden falls on you. So anytime you cash a check against your account, you are accepting full responsibility for that check being good. If it's not, YOU pay the price. That's why banks put a hold on your account for the amount of the check you are cashing. And I know it's happened to probably 99% of the FG folks reading this. You take a check to the bank, and they say "I'm sorry. You don't have enough money in your account to cash this." And you're wondering "WTF is that? All I wanna do is cash it?" That's why. The bank holds that exact amount of money until that check clears. If the check bounces, the bank knows it can recoup it's loss.

ahhh...very good...now i just need to take what i've learned here today and see how i can best apply it to my advantage, lol...thanks AOM...i just didnt really see the angle but ofcourse...you'd be responcible for it through the check cashing place too...that was a stupid mind fart on my part...i just didnt see it!! lol i knew it was a scam, but it was real intresting on how it was unfolding...if you get a certain someone i can see that you can make a few G'S off them...hit a high number of those people and you can make a big buck fast!!! but if they (the mark) really looks at things its BLATANTLY a scam!! you cant help but see it!!!
