Yeah, I got an inversion table. I haven't had a chance to try it out but I can't wait. I have a friend that has one and he swears by it.

      Re: Sciatica

Well, I am still having pain. I guess I will have to break down and go to the doctor. I went home at lunch yesterday, took a muscle relaxer, used my inversion table, put ice on my lower back for 20 minutes about every 3 hours, and still no luck. It feels better, but stilll hurts.

What do you guys think? It is really killing me not being able to go to the gym.

Have you tried heat? You can still go to the gym and do upper body but I would be careful of anything for your lower body. Also, limit the cardio and if you try a bike, do not use the recumbant one.

I understand your pain and disappointment when it comes to going to the gym. I have been suffering with an injury for almost 3 years that I thought was corrected through surgery last year. Now my activity is more limited than ever. Remember to take care of this now so it doesn't turn into something bigger.

You can ice 20 minutes every hour if you can. Like baby1 said, you might want to try some heat at this point. Did the inversion table help? These conditions often resolve on their own without any treatment. The fact that you're better is a good sign. Hopefully it is just a temporary thing that will go away. As for Chiropractors, those that are ART Certified are usually the best imo. ART Chiros are on pretty much every pro sports team these days and I know the Olympic training center is pretty much ART Chiropractors only... You can find someone at activerelease.com if you decide to go that route...good luck.

Well, I read that initially you don't want heat because it will make the inflammation worse. It might help now. I will give that a try as well.

That is what I did last night with the ice. I am for sure going to do that again tonight. The inversion table will help but the reason it hasn't been great yet is because you have to take it slow before you can get to the full inversion level where the decompression can really work. I am still working up to that point. Right now I am only at about 20 degrees and 60 is where it really starts working. I have a physical therapist friend and they told me about 2 more stretches to try. One is used if there is a pinch in the lower spine causing the pain. It is supposed to flex the spine and relieve pressure on the nerve. I am going to try that one tonight. He actually said if it doesn't work, that he would work on me at lunch one day if I wanted. Can't beat that

              Re: Sciatica

Well heat will help relax the muscle an help to increase bloodflow to the area, that is what I was told. I have often alternated with heat and ice.

I think I am going to do that tonight. Alternate the heat and ice. Thanks for all of the suggestions. This is so irritating!!! I can feel it all the way down my leg. Yesterday, after I would sit at my desk for a few minutes, I would stand up and my right butt cheek would feel like it was on fire!! It doesn't really do that today. So, hopefully I'm in recovery phase.

I know my wife is getting tired of me complaining about it. She has been on my to go to the doctor, but I really don't like doctors. That is always my last option. But, with this being my back, I was a little more concerned this time.

                  Re: Sciatica

you covered the bases. i do inversion table 3X a week. it helps but the biggest things is keeping my hamstrings loose and ice on my back. it really flares up after lots of roundhouse kicks. i guess the rotation of the hips bothers em

Got to keep those hip flexors loose too, and that will help with the tight hams.

                      Re: Sciatica

Well, I think it has finally gone away (fingers crossed). The only effects I feel now are a spot in my calf that feels like I worked it for a week straight. I think that was from walking differently compensating for the sciatic problem. Also my low back is now tight, probably from the same thing. My goal now is to start a stretching routine and use the inversion table a few times a week.

I don't really know which thing worked the best in healing it because I threw everything at it at once!! I am glad its over though!!! Thanks for all of the help.

                        Re: Sciatica

Now my calf has this sore feeling like I have worked calves every day for a week. I figured this would have gone away by now but it hasn't. Could this just be from using different muscles more walking while compensating for the sciatic? Anyone have this feeling after they had sciatic issues? No worries, I am just curious as to what caused this.

Compensation definitely can cause aches and pains in other places. My pain goes all the way to my foot and toes.
