    Re: Wife wants a gun???

Anything under .380 just doesn't have any stopping power. You would be suprised how a person can still attack even when shot. I know from personal experience a 5.56 will drop a hadji quick.

It sounds like you have more experience on dropping the enemy where they stand than I do, but it all boils down to shot placement, really, with about any caliber pistol. shot placement shot placement shot placement...practice practice practice...Hydrostatic shock does have greater possibility with greater caliber, but handguns, from .22 to .44. You do have to place your shots. There are guys that have went down with one shot from a .32, and there are guys that have taken a full clip from a .45. Shot placement.

But on the semi-auto. Like jsjs said. You can get a .357, and practice with .38 and see if she can handle the .357 under pressure and stress. Quick follow up shots are very important with anything. Shot placement and quick recovery for follow up shots is critical. And with a wheel gun. She can just pull the trigger again if it doesn't fire. With a semi-auto, the shooter is good to know well the routine, firearm, and be ready for one of the possible issues. I'm just not for the nivice toting a semi auto until they know the gun well and how to overcome an obstacle if failure. That's also why I try to keep any jammers out of the collection. A revolver cylinder can lock up too. I was in the gun shop with an older man with a locked up cylinder on his revolver a couple months ago.

I'm right at 1000rds with the P95 without a single hicup. It eats everything I've thrown in it. I love that gun. I need to try to squeeze 2 guns in next week. I'll get one, and put one on lay-away.
      I want a .45. Maybe a P345. and that black on black Keltec .32

          Re: Wife wants a gun???

Whatever you decide to go with, you should never consider a defense gun ready to carry until you have fired at least 200 rounds of the exact ammo you intend to carry in it. This breaks the gun in and insures no failure to feed/eject issues. Many people just buy a brand of ammo and don't test it to see if their gun likes it or not.

Also, for safety you can simply keep the chamber empty and only hold 5 rounds in it instead of 6. I used to do that with a S&W 686+ 7 shot revolver, thus I would keep 6 in it. However, you suggested a 38 but I would always opt for the .357, even in a snub nose version. The reason is because you can target shoot with 38s and use .357s for protection. A .357 has much more powder and packs more knock down power. That's just my 2 cents once again.

This is pretty much the case. I want to target shoot with her to get her really comfortable shooting and to learn what she is doing before I want her carrying one around for protection. Not to mention that I haven't shot mine in a while and I need the practice myself! And I think it will be something fun for us to do together. She really likes guns but has never shot that many rounds or ever owned one.

                damn!..reach out and touch someone!
Great advice on shooting whatcha carry too. So many people, my cousin being one, purchase a pistol for self defense and never fire a round. Not the thing to do. Fire your weapon often, and practice practice practice. Things are different under stress and adrenaline flow though too.

Even worse...no offense to the .40cal folks, but my cousin bought a Browning Hi-Power in .40S&W. wtf...A Browning Hi-Power is a 9mm. period. I know...they come in .40 now too, but it's like a 1911 in .40 or something other than .45. You're messing with great engineering with some guns. Like an AK in 5.56. Then people wonder why they don't eject like the 7.62, or jam even...A Kalash jam!!!say it ain't so. Well, that AK action is allot of mass to move. That's partly why it's not good for anything more than throwing rounds randomly in full auto. all that mass movin rocks the rifle a bit more than the 5.56 AR. Semi-auto?..that 7.62 is 1 fine round.
Now that's one claiber comparison that have a punch difference. The 5.56 (varmint round) and the 7.62 (combat/self defense, hydrostatic shock producing round). which we have soldiers that have proven the 5.56 effective in a combat/self defense scenario, which takes me back to my original point with caliber. Those that say it's all caliber, that ain't all non-fiction. IMO, it's all shot placement in any handgun.

Let us know what you settle on for her. You might want to see how she handles your .40. I wouldn't talk up too much warning of recoil and all prior to her shooting. Just make sure she holds it right. If she squeezes a round off and hands it back, or gets leary about it. Then explain to her that it's a .40S&W. And, it's a compact which makes it that much more snappy. She'll, of course, see the difference in a .32 or .380, and not be so scared. Just let her know she shot your gun which is large caliber in a light gun. She'll be happy when she squeezes off a .22 revolver. But, ya never know. She may take charge of that .40.

That's true. I have been afraid that it may shy her off, but it could just make her more comfortable with the smaller caliber. Hmmmm....didn't think of that. I will let you guys know what we choose. It is supposed to be nice this weekend so I may stop and get some cheap rounds for the glock and let her test it out this weekend.

My backup piece, Khar P380. Its got some kick for a small caliber since it only weights 9oz empty. it is 3/4" wide!

that's a good choice, I've just found that with new gun owners getting them something that is easy to operate without a lot of thought helps.

Here's a drill, unload your gun, varify its unloaded, leave all ammo and mag in a different room. Now place the unloaded gun in a place of hiding or a purse etc and "pretend" your a bad guy, whoop and holler and run quickly at her. If she struggles with the action of the firearms look for something simple like a glock that she can just point and shoot. You will be surprised how many people you can take a gun away from when your even 20 feet away before they can work the action on a given firearm. If you have a "blue" gun (training weapon) you can get really creative with this type of training.

My wife and I carry 380 Keltek's as our backup. They really suck but bottom line its only for a shot I'm going to take from 10 feet or less if I'm pulling this thing out! Your right they have some kick for a tiny gun!

Well, now I am all into growing my gun collection...we didn't get to shoot last weekend because of other commitments, but when it gets warm, we will figure out something for her.

Anyway, back to growing my gun collection. I have been talking to one of my friends who has a sniper rifle. Anyone got one? I think I may look into buying one. Or maybe an AR or AK....hmmmm....too many choices!!
