They have military issue (combat) rifles all over around here. Any and every gun store. There was a VZ-58 for $600, I think it was, at the shop where I bought my P95.
The label "assault" rifle should be eliminated. They're rifles. period.
But you can find them online for very good deals, and have them shipped to your LGS (local gun shop). I paid a little more than I said for my AKM. I looked at the receipt the other day and it was $529. I hear you can find a good AK online for $350. I haven't found one yet for that, but I haven't really looked that hard. A rifle like that is something I want to examine before purchasing anyway.1 up

...I take that back. You can get a Saiga from Izhmash for $350. Then pay the dollars to convert it to an AK platform instead of that sporter they're set up as. You basically get a good receiver from Izhmash, and have to replace the furnture to have that tough AK appeal.1 up
