  • Brain damage from playing sports????

This is some very scary shit...talking about football causing thousands of mini concussions..then in years later: depression, memory loss and all kinds of other serious problems. Wonder if we knew then what we know now, would we have participated in severe contact sports like football and boxing? Do we start to re-think some of the things we push our kids into? I remember being pissed at my brother for not letting my nephew play football about 10 years ago...too dangerous he said...I was thinking my brother was raising a p ussy because he wouldnt let his son play football...I remember when my bro was playing football. He was always having a cuncussion..we didnt think it was any big deal...just a headache...keep playing or the coach will call you a poosy...LOL...maybe my bro didnt want his son to go thru thae same shit...
It would suck to think maybe our brains are a little dmaged from something we did 20 years ago..f uck!

Well helmets have got better and rules have got stricter but players do play that they might get hurt and down the line be hurt for good. But they love the game they play and would die for it. Thats why there should be insurance for football players from back in the day to right now and have the league pick up the tab. Ditka is trying to get something resolved

i think if people don't realize there are dangers in playing contact football they might need to be evaluated. However would i ever change anything i did. yes i would have kept playing in college. I love the sport and i want to play again however im done with college and going direct to the bigs leagues is almost impossible.

I never played football but grew up racing atv's. Let's just say I've had enough concussions to where I'd have to retire from football a couple times over. I've been on tracks and crashed and didn't even know how to get back to the pit area or remotely remember what happened. Well I can tell you my memory is shit and I know that's what it's from but can't do anything about it now. My short term memory is ok but long term is gone. It really sucks not remembering things I've done with my kids just a few years ago. I can't even imagine what I'll be like when I get older.

I've wondered about the possible long term effects of concussions.

After performing tests on Chris Benoit's brain, they said from him taking so many bumps in the head, his brain was that of a 70 year old man.

Pro wrestler Chris Benoit suffered brain damage from his years in the ring that could help explain why he killed his wife, son and himself, a doctor who studied Benoit's brain said Wednesday.

Reading this is some scary shit!

Benoit's brain showed the same degenerative processes that doctors working for the institute found in the brains of four men who had played pro football and committed suicide, but to a worse extent. Head trauma can cause substances called tau proteins to build up in the brain, which in turn can trigger a toxic release of phosphorous, killing brain and nerve cells. Tangles throughout Benoit's brain were telltale signals to doctors that he suffered from abnormal and dangerous tau protein deposits.

Their post-mortem diagnosis: Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a form of brain damage that is associated with blows to the head and was found in former NFLers Mike Webster, Terry Long, Andre Waters and Justin Strzelczyk.

Indeed, by the time the 40-year-old Benoit killed himself, he had the brain of a man aged 80 or older with "very severe" Alzheimer's disease, according to Cantu. "His was the most extensively damaged of the brains we have examined so far," Cantu said.

In my own heart, I can't say "Awww, poor Chris Benoit. He had an excuse." However, the reality is, he wasn't thinking in a sane manner. Was it because of his head trauma? If you read about Andre Waters (suicide by gun), Terry Long (suicide by drinking anti freeze), and Justin Strzelczyk (killed by a truck while running from the Po Po), you have to say, these guys were a sandwich short of a picnic. There definitely seems to be some direct correlation between sports, damaged brains, and mental behavior
