    Re: My gift to me

That's right. You never know when the zombies might come.lol...

$900 pre-ban. That was pricey back then. My bro got his just before Clinton's ban in '93, I think it was. He paid $269, if I remember correctly, for a Russian AK at a National Guard Armory gun show. I remember him talking about it being a good deal.
You could get about any AK around here, in those days, for under $300. Usually closer to $200. That can't be done at any gun shop, or gun show, now days. You end up paying around $500 OTD, at least, for anything now. Then they have those few that are going for well over a thousand. They come all tactical, "mall-ninja'ed" out with rails, plastic, and shyt all over. which is okay. I'm just partial to the authentic look.

Nice gun Horsepwr. I've been considering one lately too and may pick one up sooner now that I see yours. I plan to go shooting again this weekend and maybe purchase a new pistol but if I see any good deals on AKs I may pick one up.

            Re: My gift to me

They're hot right now. There isn't a gun-shop in town that doesn't carry at least one AK variant.
I absolutely love this Romanian AKM. Especially after field stripping and cleaning it. It's a great rifle made of quality American parts. The important parts. The Tapco G2 trigger group is sweet. It has about a 3-4lb squeeze. Excellent reset. The barrel is made by Mossberg, I believe, don't chissel that in stone, but it's a quality barrel that's chrome lined for corrosion resistance. The recoil is directed straight back to your shoulder. No muzzle rise at all. Thanks to the muzzle brake, and stock line. You don't want a vehicle or anyone you care about to the right of the rifle while firing, because it throws the spent shells out about 30-40ft. They come out hard and fast. I like it. And, thanks to the action and Kalash design. I've yet to have any residue, or any dirt or grime what-so-ever in the receiver. The blast doesn't get past the piston.
With an AK. You have a content feeling. You know you have the best weapon ever made for combat. And after doing some "ballistics" testing. You learn that if your target is on the other side of an automobile, or a-many-a obstacle, you can punch right through that obstacle/s and reach your target with FMJs. But, hopefully the zombies never wake up,lol...or heaven forbid, we get a taste of civil unrest. cause I know who the target would be for those that get restless. Bad idea for them when you're equipped with the 'K'. and in practice. But all that aside, hopefully. These rifles are a blast to just go plink with. And the ammo is cheap.
Check out my refinish job. Prettiest, most quality wooden furniture finish on any AK. I'm proud.

HP did you end up doing any other modifications?..scope or anything?

...i was looking at the tactical style, but now i think I might like to stick with the original wooden stuff...yours looks pretty sweet.

..kinda thinking of looking for a scope that would match the time frame..in other words not a super tactical sniper looking scope with all the wooden old school looking furniture.

Much thanks for the compliment, if your referring to that link to my refinish job. I'm very pleased with how it turned out myself. I'm proud of that rifle. The wood on Kalash rifles is never the best, but I like the authentic look. And I just find the wood furniture to be more appealing really. Especially if you put some effort into a refinish job.

I haven't added a scope yet. I was going to get an Ultimak rail, but just last week, decided; why spend $100 on that gas tube rail when RomAKs have a scope mount on the side of the receiver. UTG makes an excellent scope mount rail out of aircraft aluminum to mount dircectly to the rifles with the scope mount. As for the scope. I'm just going to go with a red-dot peep-site. Just something like a 1x32, quick acquisition red-dot. Easy on the eyes. no need to shut one eye. "quick acquisition"...
The wood is timeless to me. There's a wide range of scopes that look good on an AK. There have been those outfitted with 4-16x60 for the sniper. Being I just want something for quick acquisition plinking and gaining a nice edge. I'm going with a red/green-dot 1x30ish.

This is the UTG scope rail I'm talking about. They have a Gen4 with quick attachment and lock, but I like the Gen3 cause it bolts on. I'll probably put a bright ass LED light on the side rail. maybe. The creeps come out at night.

God you've got me wanting to buy another gun. I'll have to pm you when I'm ready for advice. I was thinking about buying a P90 sub but maybe I'll go this route instead.

So many rifles, so many choices. I had been wanting an AK, as military issue, combat ready, and in the original 7.62x39mm cartridge, for a long time. No sporter variant.

I just picked one of these up at Dunhams (a sporting goods store locally) fpr $379--I felt it was a great deal, I've always wanted one, and couldn't pass the deal up--My wife is awfully pissed though--she'll get over it

Ha, pics will be up tonight--I'm kinda bummed about letting the SKS go, but i like the AK better-- I am going to refinish it like you did yours, just have to pick a color to do it in. I still have to do the super cleaning on it too. Between my new Glock and the AK, my gun collection was greatly upgraded over the past month

                              Re: My gift to me

                              hell yeah! sounds like it.
Worry not. You'll love the AK.

When you field strip it. You'll see that that reddish, rust color stuff all in and around the bolt and bolt carrier. I thought that might be surface rust. It is not. That's the grease the manufacturer used to lube the action with. You'll see just how quality, clean, and well fit everything is when you field strip it. After cleaning it yourself, of course, with some better lube.

I had never field stripped a Kalash rifle, even having a Soviet Mak-90 Sporter. But after seeing the action, and how it operates...that's the deal for operation right there. It's just a very simple and hefty action. It is the design for combat.
You got a nice duo. I've heard the Glock referred to as the AK of pistols. In reference to it's simplicity, and fail-not functionality. Engineered for combat, and to keep going 'bang' in any and all conditions too.
