I've been having a horrible time with my sinuses/allergies and have been on 4 rounds of antibiotics since November and 2 of those times the doctor also treated me with a 6 days of predisone. Anyhow I felt fantastic while I was taking predisone and told the doc I would like to be on a low dose of that for a long time and he said no.
SIDE EFFECTS: Side effects of prednisone and other corticosteroids range from mild annoyances to serious, irreversible damage, and they occur more frequently with higher doses and more prolonged treatment. Side effects include retention of sodium (salt) and fluid, weight gain, high blood pressure, loss of potassium, headache and muscle weakness. Prednisone also causes puffiness of the face (moon face), growth of facial hair, thinning and easy bruising of the skin, impaired wound healing, glaucoma, cataracts, ulcers in the stomach and duodenum, worsening of diabetes, irregular menses, rounding of the upper back ("buffalo hump"), obesity, retardation of growth in children, convulsions, and psychiatric disturbances. The psychiatric disturbances include depression, euphoria, insomnia, mood swings, personality changes, and even psychotic behavior. Prednisone suppresses the immune system and, therefore, increases the frequency or severity of infections and decreases the effectiveness of vaccines and antibiotics. Prednisone may cause osteoporosis that results in fractures of bones. Patients taking long-term prednisone often receive supplements of calcium and vitamin D to counteract the effects on bones. Calcium and vitamin D probably are not enough, however, and treatment with bisphosphonates such as alendronate (Fosamax) and risedronate (Actonel) may be necessary. Calcitonin (Miacalcin) also is effective. The development of osteoporosis and the need for treatment can be monitored using bone density scans. Prolonged use of prednisone and other corticosteroids causes the adrenal glands to atrophy (shrink) and stop producing the body's natural corticosteroid, cortisol. If prednisone is abruptly withdrawn after prolonged use, the adrenal glands are unable to produce enough cortisol to compensate for the withdrawal, and symptoms of corticosteroid insufficiency (adrenal crisis) may occur. These symptoms include nausea, vomiting and shock. Therefore, prednisone should be discontinued gradually so that the adrenal glands have time to recover and resume production of cortisol. Until the glands fully recover, it may be necessary to treat patients who have recently discontinued corticosteroids with a short course of corticosteroids during times of stress (infection, surgery, etc.), times when corticosteroids are particularly important to the body. A serious complication of long-term use of corticosteroids is aseptic necrosis of the hip joints. Aseptic necrosis is a condition in which there is death and degeneration of the hip bone. It is a painful condition that ultimately can lead to the need for surgical replacement of the hip. Aseptic necrosis also has been reported in the knee joints. The estimated incidence of aseptic necrosis among long-term users of corticosteroids is 3-4%. Patients taking corticosteroids who develop pain in the hips or knees should report the pain to their doctors promptly.
I have been also having a very hard time with my sinuses and allergies lately too. I know for a fact that my cat really bothers me, but there is no getting rid of her. My eyes are puffy all the time and I can't stand that. I have been searching for natural things to help me. I was thinking of investing in a good air purifier for the house. Do you happen to use one at home?
I have also read that this helps allergies, as a more natural approach.
Quercetin
Quercetin is a phytochemical that is part of the coloring found in the skins of apples and red onions. It has been isolated and is sold as a dietary supplement. In the Body: Quercetin is a powerful antioxidant. It is also a natural anti-histamine, and anti-inflammatory. Research shows that quercetin may help to prevent cancer, especially prostate cancer. Why Use It: Quercetin's antihistamine action may help to relieve allergic symptoms and asthma symptoms. The anti-inflammatory properties may help to reduce pain from disorders such as arthritis. Men who are concerned about prostate problems would also benefit from quercetin. Quercetin may also help reduce symptoms like fatigue, depression and anxiety. Where To Find Quercetin: To get more quercetin, you can increase your intake of apples and red onions, which will improve your diet. If you want more quercetin, you can take a dietary supplement. FRS Healthy Energy offers energy drinks with quercetin, green tea extract and vitamins.
Thanks baby, I guess I really don't want to be on a low dose of predisone. I've got an appointment next week with an ear, nose, and throat doctor. I had a really bad flare up like this about 14 years ago and he gave me a couple shots that really straightened things out.
This problem started early November when we were swarmed with those asian beatles.
I always start treating my allergies Pre-allergy season. My allergy specialist said you have better luck keeping them in check if you start pre-allergy season. But of course sometimes its just not possible.
I have tried everything there is from natural remedies, to scripts, the best thing I have found that helps is Nasonex, I use it a few times a day and it does help. It treats the symptoms pretty well. But its just for sinus, nasal allergies it won't help others. Here's some info on it.
Nasonex 24 hour allergy relief, prescription strength now over the counter! Use Nasonex for everyday, all-day, all-night relief of year-round and seasonal allergy symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, itchy nose, and nasal congestion. Non-drowsy.
