I also think your reaction was the correct one. Number one, you never know what these young punks will do these days. Many of them would rather shoot you than fight you. Number two, what you did was set a very good example for your son.
Me on the other hand, I tend to flip out when someone says something like that to my wife. The last time a guy said something like that to an old GF, I ended up punching the window out of his car. Granted this was about 10 years ago, but when I hear someone disrespect my woman, it just flips a switch and I don't control it very well.
