I wonder how many people actually understand the correct form of our government. Our government is a Republic but sadly the politicians always refer to it as a democracy. How many people even know the difference?
We pledge allegiance to the flag for the Republic for which it stands, not the democracy. This is the plain and simple truth. People need to realize that a democracy will always lead to totalitarianism, regardless of good intentions. When a majority rules with no regard for the Constitution, our rights are consistently stripped from us while the system of checks and balances is ignored. This of course is the way a democracy works. It is always a vote of the majority even though it may take away individual rights. In a republic you cannot pass any bill that violates individual rights, no matter what the majority desires. Think about this, it is a serious issue and one that exists today in our country. The framers went to great lengths to leave the word democracy out of the constitution and said that it is one of the most dangerous forms of government in the world.
