I have mixed feelings about this one. A suspension of these kids probably would have been enough, although what happened to them probably scared the shit out of them, which isn't such a bad thing. Children need to learn to be respectful starting at a young age. This isn't the kind of behavoir that I would like to hear my child engaging in. A slap on the wrist for this is not enough, imo.

This specific school , Perspectives Charter Schools, bases their school education on a "disciplined life". This may be one of the reasons the students were treated this way.

        Re: you're kiddin me Chicago

If my daughter even looked at a holding cell downtown for allegedly paricipating in a food fight, someone would..probably more than one person...would witness my opinion in person.
with that said. My daughter knows what food is for, and how to act at the table. Though, if she were to forget, I take responsibility for her behavior. That's my job.

I guess if someone sends their child to a school for discipline, that's their choice to hand the reins over to others. I don't want, need, or expect anyone else to raise my children. Institutionalization by choice...comes across odd to me.

...ugh...I just read the story. I feel the same as those parents. They didn't just haul them downtown for a scare tactic. They slapped criminal charges on those children.

I agree that the matter should have been handled by school authorities, but obviously someone called the police.

The 25 children were charged with "misdemeanor reckless conduct". I also believe the story from these inner city policemen would be told a little differently.

See you guys dont live here and dont see the school shootings like we do and here and what happens down in the city. These inner school city kids can be rough and if they had to go to the police station then theres more to the story. Trays were thrown then oranges and apples were thrown, what if someone got hit in the eye with the tray or orange and went blind.

Children need dicsipline in these areas and that was the best thing for them

if knives and forks and trays are flying through the air that could get dangerous.
In the eighth grade, I had a girl dump a big bowl of applesauce on my head. Humiliated, I dealt out some lunchroom justice of my own and she was wearing m0re than applesauce..LOL

                Re: you're kiddin me Chicago

The news report this morning just mentioned "kids in Chicago locked up for having a food fight". Throwing a child in jail, and hitting them with criminal charges is more than extreme for a food fight. That's something parents should get called for. Generating a criminal record for throwing food is crazy. Hell, we played a game called dodge-ball during P.E. Object of the game; people are targets, that you throw a kickball at, to get them (out) of the game. Wall-ball...another one. wall-ball was played on our own time with a tennis ball.

I agree with the severity dealing with the kid/kids that threw trays, anything that could put an eye out or really hurt someone. Those little punks might well deserve a criminal charge. Go ahead and get their rap-sheet started, or lengthened. School attendants said they saw who threw what, so they should weed out the ones who chose to seriously endanger others. But it sounds like they stuck every kid involved behind bars.

Thank goodness for getting paddled back in the day. I couldn't imagine how much time a good bunch of us rough little ones would've spent in juvi with that madness.
Even worse, having to deal with our folks when we got home. I think you could do a survey around here, and most everybody would choose a paddlin over getting our parents called to the school when we were coming up.
And that's probably the big difference between some inner city kids and the suburban family. Key word (family) lacks from the inner city kids house.

I personally would not consider a "misdemeanor charge" as a criminal charge.

yeah, there's actually a pretty long list of items that will serve up a felony that I personally don't view as criminal.

...what sucks though, is how the system works. so many misdemeanors=felony...felony looks nasty on your record, etc...

Really? That stuff only happens in Chicago? Wow. How naive of me to think that stuff happens in other places.
I must have misread that 2009 list that came out. Philly, Detroit, Birmingham, they're all the top 25 SAFEST cities to live in. That's why Chicago wasn't on there!

Noone said it doesn't happen anywhere else, but this article is specific to something that happened in Chicago, not the other cities you mentioned! Talk to any cop who works the southside and they'll tell you how bad it can get there. It has been bad there for many many years and is just getting worse.

Cops who work in those areas get very cynical because of what they see on a daily basis. Sometimes I think their reactions are affected by this.

Throwing mashed potatoes in a kids face is just good clean fun. Flinging a tray across the cafeteria like a Frisbee isnt .
