Because he wanted movies I assume drug related. To most, this is a kids movie. Those of us that are in the know, can see the surrealism.

im saying this based on the premise that req. for a dream isnt so much a drug movie as a commentary on how any unhealthy obsession or addiction can end you, and you wont even see it happening....
