My backyard was sodded about a month ago. I've watered it to the point of too much in areas, and it's lost it's lush green grass.
Do I need to hit it hard with some Scotts, again?..or what?
I would've put money on it coming in strong because of the soil type, and lower lieing property. but nope.

I know dude! It's driving me crazy! The front yard is that way. I've never watered this front lawn, and it's thick lush...I gotta mow it every week. Even through 2 week dry spells.
The new sod though,..i don't fukin know bro! It's puzzled the hell outa me too???
Well, you don't want to fertilize it too much. I added some some to my front yard (Western TN) and it was really thick and nice and then when the rain stopped, it didn't look as good. I started watering it by hand and it came back.
Do you water by hand or sprinkler? If by sprinkler, then you may want to take the hose out and soak it to the point of being to wet to walk across it. It probably won't get really good and thick until the new roots really take hold well enough to survive the heat

I water by sprinkler, but I let it get to the point you can't walk across it. That's what I meant by "too much".

They do take root very quickly but it takes a while for the new roots to be good enough to withstand the bad temps. I thought my sod was gone too, but it has come back. All of this is what I was told when I called and had the same questions as you.

It's due to the time of year (aug), especially down yonder in your parts. when i was a landscaping foreman we used to get calls like this all the time from installs we did. It used to scare the heck out of me, but always came in fine later on in fall or spring.
what i do know is this bro:
Don't fertalize it again, it will burn the grass
city water doesnt offer alot cuz of the high floride and other crap
dont water midday ever,it boils the grass
water it lightly everyday for a short time
like said above those roots have to strengthen,they wont do it this time of year,has to do with nitrogen,bacteria,dormancy that grass goes thru, blah,blah,blah

whooo...(big sigh)...Thanks for the reassurance tn94z and Doink. I was almost positive that I would be pulling it up and re-sodding. The sod guy, a friend of mine that I went to high school with, told me that it had taken root by 3wks. But, without seeing the new green grass growing, I was thinking not.

I was in the same spot. They do take root quickly...but only enough to not be able to pull it up. I was told it takes a little while to get mature roots that can withstand the elements. I think you are alright.

you water too much, if you water less, the roots will go deep looking for water..as much as you are watering the roots are staying right there because thats where the water is

but that makes sense. I've wondered if i've watered too much. Man, this fresh sod biz is pretty touchy.
Is it brown in those spots? You may have some hot spots, but they should fill in. too much fertilizer isn't good!! Remember its still in shock a bit from being cut rolled and then laid by you. Your weather may have a bit to do with it as well. Whats the ratio on the fertilizer you put on it to begin with? It should be broken down into N-P-K %'s.
ertilizer ratios recommended for turf have typically been those of 4-1-2, 3-1-2 or 2-1-2 ratios. The ratios have been determined to keep N-P-K balanced for both soil storage and plant uptake requirements. On sandy soils, it is a wise bet to use complete fertilizers that have 3-1-2 ratio at each fertilizer application. On heavier textured soils (loams or heavier soils with clay and silt) you can often just apply nitrogen on 75% of the fertilizer application dates. On the other 25% you can apply a complete fertilizer.

I'm not sure exactly what fertilizer was used. They came about a week after it was laid and rolled the spreader around the backyard after they rolled a big wheel all over it.(to tamp it down). It's been about a month since they laid it. That's why I was thinking it could maybe be hit again with fertilizer for good measure. I've never had a problem keeping a good lawn, but this new sod is kickin my a$$.
