Local man allegedly involved
in drug transfer from China
OLD BRIDGE — A township man was arrested Friday after an investigation revealed he was the "middle man" in the transfer of a large quantity of steroids that were shipped from China to be sold in the United States, authorities said.
Xiao G. Su, also known as Gary Su, a 28-year-old resident of Kristen Court, was charged by officers from the Middlesex County Narcotics Task Force around noon Friday after they executed a search warrant at Su’s home.
Moments prior to the arrest, Su — who is vice president of Catherych Inc., a nutritional supplement wholesale business being operated out of his Kristen Court residence — had allegedly accepted a package containing a large quantity of anabolic steroids in both liquid and powder forms, according to information provided by the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.
The package was mailed from a pharmaceutical company in China, and had been intercepted Friday morning following a month-long investigation by officers with the county task force, the Old Bridge Police Narcotics Unit and the federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
The undercover officers then arrangedfor delivery of the package to Su’s residence.
Officials believe that Su’s role in the transfer was to accept the package, care of Catherych Inc., and ship it to a company located in Colorado that would then manufacture the substance into pill and capsule forms for distribution around the country, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Representatives of the DEA reported to police that the anabolic steroids seized in Old Bridge would have been purchased in China for about $60 in U.S. currency, and that the substances could be resold in the U.S. with a "street value" of $500,000, once processed into pill and capsule form.
Su was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and possession with intent to distribute. He was lodged at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center, North Brunswick, in lieu of $50,000 bail.
Officials said this week that the investigation is ongoing and that additional arrests could be made.
