    The grandma scam:
This one is only a few months old and has been highly successful and is being done right here in the states. People are purchasing a list of number of females in a certain age range (65-80 seems to be the target). Based on the age of the potential victim will determine how old of a person/voice you use to make the call. They call the old woman and say "hi grandma is your grandaughter". They make sure there is background noise and what appears to be a bad connection. The "grandaughter" says her car has broken down and she is stuck with no money and she will explain everything later. She is going to put the mechanic on the phone and he will explain. The "mechanic" says that the repair will cost X$'s (usually $150-$400) and he will need to be wired the money if they are going to repair the vehicle right away. With very few tries, most grandmas agree to send the money. It's very easy to pick up the money with a fake id of:
    John jones
    1 apple ave
    Anywhere, XX 12345
To make it seem more legit they have them send it to:
    John's auto repair
    C/O John jones
    1 apple ave
    Anywhere, XX 12345
They usually move from city to city after getting 10-15 scores over a 3-4 day period.

    Re: Scams...

I heard about this on our local news broadcast. But the good news was they interviewed an elderly lady who had received such a phone call. She was cleaver enough to ask questions, since the caller gave her a name that didn't resemble any of her grandkids' names. So she played alone with them. They claimed to be in jail out of state and needed her to wire some money for them to be bailed out. Instead, she offered to take the money directly to the proper location. The jackass fell for it and she had the cops meet them and arrest them.
