  • Opinions on Tats and Piercings in a professional job

Ok, Im really needing someone at one of my businesses to greet the public, answer phones and generally connect with people.

She came in and applied and I told her I would give her a 2-3 day tryout.

She is 23. Slender. Has a Pierced eyebrow, lip, tongue and nose. Eyebrow piercing is pink and green. Numerous piercings down her ears. Stars tattooed all the way around the inside of one ear and Two Huge Strawberries tattooed on the back of her neck and her hair is short so they show.

I have had a couple people make comments to me like "WTF?"..LOL...Im trying to be open minded, but I just dont know about this.
    thanks for your opinions

It really depends on what kinda business you are running. I would say for starters eyebrow and lip ring gotta go. tell her that she can wear 2 ear rings per ear. Most people don't notice that people have their tongues pierced i had mine for about 2 years and most people never noticed unless i told them or made it obvious. The tattoos their really isn't much you can do about that and as long as they are tasteful it probably won't be an issue. Tattoos and the such aren't viewed in the same way that they were 10 years ago and as long as they are tasteful it seems most people don't mind anymore.

to me thats a little over board. not for me...i wouldnt give a shyt if i walked in to your place, but i could see where people would. i could say, to loose 1 customer becouse they aint comphy, is too many too loose, but thats not fair...i do think you'd loose more than 1.

physical appearance is very important in our society we love to put people in buckets and stereo-type people. its just how it is. When i worked in sales there were only other young and attractive sales reps... either college athletes or in a fraternity or sorority. a person is gonna buy how you sell before they buy what you sell. if you look like a freak then people are gonna judge you. she might be fun to "tag" but i would never let it effect my professional life.

Gosh, its hard. She has a great work ethic so far. Never on her cell phone. She is constantly busy doing constructive things. Im going to have a talk with her tomorrow. I just havent had any real sit down time with her yet, but am going to mentiion the piercings tomorrow. What a day and age we live in. Who would have thought just 15 years ago that lip and tongue rings would be a job site issue? sheesh.

Well, sh e is way more professional thn the chicka who came to work in a harley davidson tube top..LOL

Sounds like she is a hard worker. If your business is for a lot of young people, I would say leave her alone.

Me personally? doesnt matter. If she is exceptional, if she outperforms everybody else, shes going to win the job. Her appearance doesnt bug me. Maybe because I had real long 80s hair..lmao...but its not about me and she needs to try and take out the nose, lip and eyebrow for the time she is in my office. For the people that come to meet with me that might freak the fuk out.
She is going to really have to proove herself. I need to gently let her know that double negatives in speech cannot be allowed. Lots of double negatives. Like:'No, we dont have none of those'...Ok, so how do you approach her? say her speech is way worsre than dukes of hazzard? LOL..its going to launch her career.

we all know what the public looks at people with tats and peircings they dont like it and when clients come in to see a doc the should see a clean cut person.Ask her to clean up the peircings a little and cover the tats. I'm the first one ton say keep her because i'm tattooed but in the corperate world people perceive-sp us differently. ask her and see what she says. It sucks to be like that and then have to get a respectable job. I was askled to wear long sleeves shirts when I was the head building engineer when I was laid off at united years ago because it was a corperate hotel I didnt mind because I knew how people look at others.

Conservatism. If in the public eye and/or customer service, i believe conservatism should be practiced within a professional environment. Reason being is some folks won't be affended however others will. To be safe...practice conservatism and no one can judge

First impressions are everything. Even in todays time, in a PROFESSIONAL atmosphere peircings and tatts are not acceptable. Its fine to have them, but they should not be in open view

haha you guys must not live in California! Well maybe not all of Cali but where I live thats pretty much a standard look. It all depends on what type of business you run as far as I'm concerned.

One question.... did you know she had all this when you hired her cause I am not sure where you are but in California once you hire someone you can't fire them for having tattoos or piercings once you've figured out you don't like them.

With that many tats and piercings......she should be working at a tatoo parlor. I really don't think it looks good in an office of a doctor, lawyer, dentist.....and so on.
