  • Alcohol. Good, bad or indifferent?

what are your thoughts or experiences?

Just saw that this state is looking to pass a law making it Murder if someone drinks and drives and kills someone. Thats extreme, but...

My personal opinion is that alcohol has NO redeeming virtues for neither individuals or society.. None! What if alcohol weren't around? Maybe our drug of choice would be cocaine, which was 100% legal at one time. Who knows. Just seems like mankind has always looked for ways to alter human emotional states. Our culture favors alcohol for this purpose, probably because it is so accessible. would be hard to imagine our society without it. So much of what we do socially revolves around alcohol consumption.
Anyway, I was for a period a hard core drinker. Like a 750 mls of vodka a night drinker. Had to become totally repulsed by alcohol in order to stop drinking. It was a bit ch to stop. Thank God I did. Theres no doubt it would have killed me.

I remember nights I would drive 40 miles out of the way just to avoid possible sobriety checkpoints. I cant count how many times I drank and drove. I got one DUI in 2004. Did it stop me? no. I gotta say, it is really nice now to nev er be worried about getting another one.

Wow~!! Your one of the lucky ones~! I think alcohol has its place in society, I believe its the people who make it bad. Those with the addictive personality or who just plain don't know how to keep things in moderation. Now days I think its a MUST to have a designated driver or a taxi to get home. Its just plain stupid to drive after drinking, one of those what can go wrong will go wrong moments~!!

Thats great for you. I'll always have a few drinks. I wont drink like I used to but I enjoy an adult beverage with a pretty girl or just hanging out at a restaurant bar. I cant stand regular bars anymore. Hell, I live in Louisiana and after lunch, everyone I know want to know how long before happy hour starts. Im going this evening as a matter of fact for a few cold ones with some friends.
I believe in most things done in moderation.

Glad to hear you made the decision that was right for you.....
        Oh...BTW....happy Thursday everyone!!!

I don't have a problem with drinking, but people need to be responsible. I personally have 2(yes 2) DWI's- one in Texas and one in Louisiana that I got way back and now that I look back- I could have truely ruined someones life by my irresponsibility. Like it has been said- In Moderation

The sad part is throughout the years they have lowered the legal limit to the point where you can't even have a glass of wine with dinner and drive home. All with the idea that any alcohol effects reaction time. So does driving while tired. So does smoking while driving... Maybe we should pass a law that you can't drive for 6 hours after working legs at the gym?

^yup...No doubt. I think alcohol effects people differently. One person may drive w a BAC of 2.0 with no problems, while another may hit .08 and be falling down drunk. I know this might sound kinda delusional, but I really dont recall anytime when I drove after drinking and did not have total focus. The night I got my dui, I had driven for an hour on the interstate. I blew a .08 and I swear I didnt feel one bit under the influence. I was totally alert and aware of what I was doing. Thats what sucked about it. My days of drinking hard were only for a while after my divorce, but I didnt go about it lightly. It statrted out light and evolved to a major nightly occurence. I damn near drank myself to death. Havent had a drink in over a year. Glory be.

Re: Alcohol. Good, bad or indifferent?

Ok I have "had" four DUII's yep, one when I found out I was going to TDC for five years, one when my girlfriend split on me, one when I was just driving through town, and the last one when I allmost killed myself when I took my eyes off the road. to me I was fine no stumbling or slurring just so happened to get pulled over for not using a blinker or just curious. I found out from my mom just a few years ago that before I was born my dad killed a family of four drinking and driving. so yeah my drinking and driving days are f'ing done with. it's selfish and just not good at all period, if I wind up having a few at a friends place or up in the woods I'll just break out my sleeping bag and just crash there till morning. it's just not worth killing someone. I like to drink but after a few it just is'nt any fun to me anymore, plus I feel lke crap the next day. I dont go out and drink cause I hate drunks, I mean the a$$hole in the crowd that thinks he has to fight someone, or the chick that has to spill stuff on ya and burn holes in everything with her cigarette. back in the day I hardly drank at all just puffed bud, I stayed sharp and never got in trouble. so how are things now ? Ol' Skool baby !! I just stick to my MMJ and maby a few brews or coupla vodkas. less beer cause im working on a flatter gut. So should a person who kills someone while driving drunk be charged with murder ? I say yes, because everyone has known by now not to f'ing do it. the soccer mom texting ? hell yeah, lock her a$$ up too ! if you know that what you're doing wrong might get someone killed then yes. I shake your hand and give you much respect for being an honest man Dzone, you're a righteous brother.

That was my whole point of laws becoming rediculous. I'm against drunk driving and as much as I can miscommunicate through the written word at times, we have all seen throughout the years our personal freedoms have been infringed upon horribly.
I have more to add but I'll save that for a secure forum.

Amen to that. currently the FDA and the drug companies want to ban our freedom to choose what supplements we want to take. They would love to ban everything from vitamin C to whey protein...dont get me started on that! Sports Illustrated last week hasd a cover story 'OUR dangerous obsession with supplements"..it was all about how supplements are killing people and should be banned. Of course SI is totally left wing communistic owned by Time/Warner. The government obviously thinks we are way too free in this country and would be a lot safer if we let the government rule our lives.. Phuckers.

I can take it or leave it. I'll have a drink sometimes with dinner, but it is not something I have to have. I neither condem or condone it, it is a personal choice.
I used to be a bartender years ago. To see how alcohol can ruin a persons life is a shame. You can talk to them all you want, but untill the decide they have a problem and want to get rid of it,there is not a lot you can do.
Push it, Pull it, Rack it. Repeat untill wide!!

Take nothing I say as serious, What do I know, I sell water!!

Texas has a law about getting in an acident while tired at the wheel and as most know- they have been passing laws in states about driving and talking on the phone(Thank God not here)
