Re: night, night pontiac!!!
well...the idea that gm put forward to begin with was a decent one at the time, but they let the lines get blurred as you pointed out.. origanally the chevy was the starter car...cheap, reliable transportation, without the sex. from there, the customer would move to pontiac...sporty, sexy, exciting, but with 4dr function. from there to olds/buick...practical. from there to caddilac...you reached the top of the hill! you deserve to be spoiled.
but...as different units proved popular and people became nameplate oriantated, they would produce the same car across 3-4 badges, trying to appease the customer of that brand!! they fuked up.
now... gmc should be the truck division for gm...ALL TRUCKS ARE GMC'S!!! just make different trim levels.
now, pulling the top selling saturn, buick, pontiac and chevy... would still be a pretty large line up, but, you would think that, that would be the way to go.
problems they will face in doing this are many...first off, how do you package dealers? gm/gmc and then cadilac? how do you buy out the other dealers franchise holders? this will be a VERY big problem, that in the long run, they mat be able to pull it off, but RIGHT NOW, they need to keep some of the dealer points open. also, cancelling all those units at once will stress the suppliers as well as their own internal's. factory's have to be consaledated and re-tooled.
i think they should keep the chevy stores and sell the seperate chevy trucks FOR NOW. they should consaladate buick/pontiac and pair with gmc. cadi stands alone. you can close atleast 1/2 the pontiac franchises and 1/2 the buick and combine the remainder. closures based on sales. your not gonna want to take the #1 pontiac dealer and close him!!! you need that guy.
saturn designs should be folded into chevy.
sell hummer (good luck), sell saab.
there's alot of other things that should be done, but it's difficult to lay it all out in this forum. the government really dont have a clue what they are doing. chopping pontiac outright is a fukin mistake!! they still have the g8, the g6 and they were about to put together a firebird that was more standout from the camaro than in the past!! that car was set to be badass!!
i dont know how they are gonna deal with all these dealers either... they need to shut down about half of them!
