If it gets better then it is most likely a shock. Is it a hard bounce or soft and smooth bounce?

Easy way to tell if it's a shock problem.

Go out and push down hard on the bumper.
If it bounces more than coming up and going back to a normal stopped position it's the shocks.

There should be little to no additional movement after you push down on it except to come back to normal.

Check your shocks but also could be something else. What kind of car is it? A friend of mine had a BMW that did that and it was something underneath that came unmounted.

yip yip. Sounds very shock/strutish. Has it gradually got that bad, or did it just start all of a sudden? Have you looked at the struts to see if there's any leakage?

                            Re: car question

no doubt shocks push on the bumper if the car bounces 3 times it is the shocks, springs rarely go bad... reason why it get better as you go is because shock build up a little pressure as you go... ie sorta like if your break fluid is low you can pump your breaks to build some pressure back up.
