I'm not getting too worked up about it. The people haven't minded the military stepping in where the local governments failed such as hurricane Katrina. But, hopefully my family and I won't be in a place where the military would be needed to step in due to lousy local structure.
Jeez, I just had the picture of that little boy in New Orleans staring into the camera saying, "we out here...where's our help?..where's our food and water?"...uhff...he couldn't have been 7yrs old and he was mad at someone else for his situation. ah...wasn't his fault. He was probably just regurgitating what his folks were saying.

personally i know i'd like the safe feeling that would no doubt over come me, upon seeing solidiers in uniforms with automatic weapons on my street corner! no longer would i fear the stray deer, running out from the ditch, in an OBVIOUS "suicide attack" on my vehicle causing me to crash! those soldiers would take them out!! saving me, and more importantly, my F150!

I believe the American public got suckered into fear mongering with the Patriot Act. I have my local police to protect me from what ever crime I'm truly worried about. I don't need soldiers enforcing local police actions upon me and/or my neighborhood.

Exactly. The government uses fear to slowly extract freedom.

Does no one find it interesting that this initiative was announced right after the Mumbai attacks. I won't go as far as saying that the Mumbai incident had CIA support, but I will say that gov't officials were waiting for an event such as this to happen before they announced this plan.
