        It's a global economy now...

First of all my experience with American made cars wasn't a very good one. I had a Ford EXP, brand new and 1 wk and the engine blew up. Left me stranded on I-285 in ATL. Yes, they rebuilt the engine, but the car gave me problems the entire time I had it. By time I traded it which was only 4 yrs later it was burning oil. I had two other friends with these cars and they all sucked too. Now I realize that in the 80's American car manufacturers just didn't have building small cars down, that is why I stayed away from them. Today I believe American car manufacturers build a much better small car than in the 80's.

The economy is so much different than back them. It's a global economy now. What happens in Japan, China, England, etc effects our stock market as well.

Toyota has 9 manufacturing facilities located in the USA: Corrolla, Tacoma, Camry, Solars, Avalon, Sequoia, and Sienna are made here in the USA. Estimated 22,200 employees. In 2007 Toyota announced they were building 5 more facilities in North America. I have no idea what's happened to those plans now that the economy is in the toilet.

Honda has 6 auto plants and 14 major plants in North America. Honda employes an estimated 37,000 in USA. Accord and Civics are made here in the USA.

Nissan has 3 manufacturing facilities in the USA...in Smyrna and Decherd, TN, and Canton, MS. In TN they make the Nissan Altima, Maxima, Xterra, Frontier and Pathfinder. In MS the Nissan Altima, Nissan Quest, Nissan Armada, Nissan Titan and Infiniti QX56 are made.

Kia is building a plant in Columbus, GA. BMW, Mercedes, Saab are just a few others with plants here in the states, and now Volkswagon is building a facilities in Chattanooga, TN.

Before these cars were manufactured in the USA, I could understand the argument, but we are so global now that if the car isn't being manufactured here then many of their parts are. I'd say that 50% of foreign cars use american made parts.

The problem is the economy. Who can afford a new car right now? I don't plan on buy one any time soon. When you don't know if you have job next week and your car is paid off or almost paid off, you just can't justify buying another one. The other problem are the union. Before those of you who are in the Union start flaming me, I just don't believe the Union has your best interest at heart.

In Las Vegas, Chicago and all these other place that have unions workers for convention and trade shows, they have all these ridicules rules that cost exhibiting companies thousands of extra dollars. A prime example is someone can't to put a light bulb in their booth lighting fixture. They are expected to hire a certify electrician put it in. They charge $85 per hour, and they have a minimum of 1 hour. To put a light bulb in a light fixture for your display booth it will cost you $85! In the cities that are unionized they don't have these kinds of rules. IMO the union's days are over. They cause companies added expenses that the companies have no choice but to pass on to their customers.

I'm going to apologize for my grammar... I'm answering the phones because they laid off our receptionist and another customer service girl. Our only customer service girl is out and the phones keep ringing off the hook. I can't seem to complete a thought before it rings again.

i agree that the unions are an ideal past it's time. at one point there was a need...now, they are a heavy burdon on the big3.

p.s. explorer....#1 selling sportute for how long?...mustang?...i wonder if they made any proffit off either of those. but i agree that the f150 is the flag ship for proffits now. but the explorer was the main generator of $ for a long time!

          Im not saying fuk them!

I am saying they never wanted to change!

What pisses me off is that GM, and Ford have european subs, who have great cars, great performance, doesnt consume alot and we never see these car here

have you see the european focus!

and im not even talking about the ST version who kick ass, here we have that car name S40 by Volvo, why oh why our focus version has an ugly front end,

both have great european cars in style in performance, but they dont bring it here. No here the american consumer wants crap, and they give them crap

Hell hyundai, they went from the worst car, to one of the best in the industry in 10 years!!!!!!!!!! Why a Korean company was able to do it, while 2 companies that are in business since 100 years did not

          why oh why!!!!

I say save the company yes, but they need to maybe redo their lineup and way of thinking, Ford have nice products out of America, same for GM, the new G8 is the Holden Commodore.........

they need to revamp themselve if they want to survive and the union need to do their part to.

yea...i've seen the focus. they had it in europe YEARS before they brought it here. focus is a great car! the fusion, the mustng, the escape, the explorer, the f150-f series (ofcourse) are all great vehicles. they havnt had nearly the prob's in the last 10 years as you make it out to be bro...fuk, even that new tundra is having all kinds of engine prob's. the 07 camary had a trans prob but you dont hear about that shyt do ya? i agree the unions make it tuff and, in my opinion, their time is over!
dixie...the cry for buying american has been going on for years. i understand there is plenty of essembly plants here now...the jobs that they have added have not replaced the ones that they have cost! (i could be wrong, but i dont think so). i know the economy is bad...it's all connected is my point.

daved105 no disrespect intended here but from reading your posts i get the distinct impression that you are a proponent of protectionizm. Either that or im misreading your posts. Bottom line is customer satisfaction. My wife did her research before buying her Toyota and for customer satisfaction it was rated at the top.

Economies function best in a free competative environment, if the big three are not able to compete, crying "patriotism" and "buy American" is just not going to cut it. People want the best product for their dollar.

The reason why i have always owned a ford is because i need a big truck that is able to carry a crew over very rough roads. They have never let me down and i will continue to own these trucks. But make no mistake, if any of the other car company's came out with a better product i would switch. I want the best value for my dollar...

                  Re: what pisses me off...

Yes Ford did improved, but they did not tag along with the foreign car

And GM, no comments on GM, from 2005 to 2008 with my chevy trailblazer

                  - rust on the hood that appeared suddenly and went all accross the hood.

                  - 4X4 system went nuts and crashed
                  - 4X4 command broke
                  - Direction broke
                  - Stearing broke
                  - Suspension arms, broke
                  - Electrical system trashed
                  - Computer needed reprogramming

in 3 years, when my suzuki, built here btw, the only thing that broke down was the Honk!

I love my truck, but if I can find the designer of it, ill kick him in the butt!

GM have all the power to create the best car in the world, with the best finition best everything, it is either a lack of faith or simply stupid.

OK here the PC crashed, but it recovered the txt above
so feck it, I dont remember

                    really...huh.

in this survey, they are 5 UNDER industry standard:

here, the lincoln/mercury line tied for 2nd. and, if you read, you'll find toyota is dropping...hmmm...(seems to me i've heard that already:
Trust MotorTrend for the best car reviews, news, car rankings, and much more. With more than 70 years of experience, we're your home for everything automotive.

point of intrest, "ford leads the domestics":
CR tells you which car brands make the best vehicles based on Overall Score, factoring in average road-test score, reliability, owner satisfaction, and safety.

my only point in this post is if you actually do research, you can find anything you want to justify what you want to do! the, "toyot's are the greatest in the world" mentality will lead you to find that they are! their satisfaction ratings are dropping. it'll be a few more years before that mind set get's adjusted to where it should be, but it'll happen.
                    (protectionizm? lol...is that a bushism?)
its hard for me to feal "disrespected" bro...you dont have to worry about hurting my feelings.
                    i'm not crying anything exept:
                    1. the public is so slanted that i'm affraid foriegn auto's will be PRECIEVED as superior until the day people insert the key and they explode (whitch wont ever happen). they (foriegn manufactures) do make alot of decent vehicles. kia's come a long way. (what ever happened to deawoo?), but they are not SO FAR out front that you cant get a comp domestic model!

                    2. the domestic vehicles are WAY more tied to our economy than people even realize! (look at dixies post...does anyone actually believe that there's a foriegn auto manufacture thats more important to our economy than any 1 of the big 3???!!)

Good reads daved150. So what's the problem? Judgeing by the statistic's the domestic manufactors are on the upswing. And it isn't due to any sense of patriotic fervor or "buy American" mentality, its customer satisfaction as i have stated is the only way they can survive.

I understand what you saying too. I hate it that the American auto industry is having so many problems. I also have heard of people having lemon foreign cars that give them problems. Any auto manufacturer can make a lemon. Also I don't put all the blame on the Unions. It also has to do with the executives running the companies. I say **** them from screwing up such great companies. They took the best companies in the world and turned them upside down and sucked them dry. Then they walk out with bonuses and million dollar severance packages.

when i started this thread, i had not really thaught of the fact that some here dont know me. i've had these debates before and just kinda picked pack up in the middle.
i've been in the autosales industry for 20 years. usedcars. mostley domestic lot's, but i've been in extended contact with all manufactures and most model lines. granted, when i get a trade, it's for one of only a few reasons...the people wanted a new one like they had. must have been a great experience.
the people are pursueded by a new launch (mustang comes to mind...04' f150 would also fit there)
or...they want to dump there piece of shyt off and drive something else home!!
piece's of shyt comes in many shapes and colors...i've seen many foriegn name plated turd's in my time!!! for the last couple years i was doing it, i was located at a ford dealer right next to a toyota store...dude...there not all that!! believe me! 25 yr service manager even made a comment to me that the "more we sell, the worst they get".
