  • Army grad won't get shot with Lions after change in military policy

Dude needs to go to war with his classmates
DETROIT (AP) -- Caleb Campbell will not get a chance to play for the Detroit Lions because of a change in military policy.

Campbell was a seventh-round draft pick for the Lions in April. At the time, Army policy would have allowed the West Point graduate to serve as a recruiter if he made the team.

But a subsequent Department of Defense policy has superseded the 2005 Army policy.

In a letter to Lions president Matt Millen dated Wednesday, U.S. Army Lt. Col. Jonathan P. Liba wrote that Campbell has been ordered to give up professional football for "full-time traditional military duties."

Liba wrote that 2nd Lt. Campbell may ask to be released from his active duty obligations in May 2010.

Typical of horrible Lions management to draft this kid. As a long time fan of the Lions I have seen awful lower round draft picks since Matt Millen took over the organization. I feel for the kid, but we should have never drafted him with the questionable nature of his ability to play. FIRE MILLEN!!

BUT AS FOR CAMPBELL, IT ISNT RIGHT THAT HE SHOULD be able to play football instead of serving in combat. that is just wrong. He is the opposite of pat tillman

He should be happy. He will get more notariety being in the military, than playing for the Detroit Frickin-Lions. Look at the many memorable Lions from the past. You have:
            1) Barry Sanders
            2)........um..........

Seriously though, it is a shame for him. I respect him more for serving the country.

              bad marketing for the army

he would do more serving as a recruiter and an example as a nfl player than doing his duty in iraq or afghanistan or bump **** susie ohio!

The Army could use the pr, but obviously the Army is not wanting to go that direction with this guy. By no means is he a brand or household name.

He signed up. He needs to stand up to his obligations.
