Some of you guys read a few posts a while back regarding my getting a DUI in the great state of Pennsylvania (I currently live in MD). As the process has begun to play itself out, it looks more and more likely (almost inevitable) that I will be required to serve a year in jail. One year !!!. Not because i hit someone, not because I was driving down the wrong side of the road, not because I ran from the police........but because I was sleeping in my car waiting on a ride to come get me because I realized I was too drunk to drive. Pennsylvania currently has no early release for good behavior (If I were to go to jail on Jan. 1st, I wouldnt be released until Dec. 31st). They do have a pre-release program in which after 66% of a sentence is served, an inmate is released into a day reporting program.....but of course that only applies to PA residents.
I have read recently that Pennsylvania was set to vote on a bill to implement good behavior into minimum sentences (less than 3 years would be required to serve 75% of their sentence, more than 3 years would be required to serve 5/6 of their minimume sentence), because of gross overcrowding of their jails. A majority are non violent offenders. But I havent really heard what the outcome was.
Its rough to know I wont be able to see my family, my friends, my girl, or do the things that all of us including myself have taken for granted everyday because I was trying to do the right thing. I asked if I had been caught actually driving down the road and pulled over what the sentence would have been then. My answer: One year. What kind of shit is that? I dont care about case law...... youre sending me the message that instead of doing the right thing, I should have taken my chances on driving home? Over a technicality (Keys in the ignition).
The one positive is that it is 99% likely that I will receive work release, although the jail will take 26% of my gross. I will be paying them approximately $17,500 for the privelege to sleep in THEIR jail. But another plus is that I will be able to keep in touch with you guys. Ill still be on everyday. I have grown to know you guys and have seen your growth, your ups and downs, your accomplishments and am happy to be a member of this board. I will be around guys.
