I have one AC mounted in the window...and for the most part it works fine..it has all features FAN and COOL...the maximum it can go is to 7...so last night and a day before it was giving me some problems... the air it blows is not cold and refreshing as it should be... there's no difference btw COOL and FAN.
if there's no diff between fan and cool either the compressor is not kicking on in the cool mode, witch means it's not blowing cold or the compressor IS coming on in the fan mode witch means you may have a wiring problem.
HE WHO MAKES A BEAST OF HIMSELF, GET'S RID OF THE PAIN OF BEING A MAN!!
It could be out of freon (sp?). Those things are like the A/C on a car, if it gets a leak then you need to replace it. They are not supposed to leak but it can happen. You can not get it refilled, you have to replace it. IMO, that's the probably it. The other thing could be like Dave said and it could be a wiring thing. Those things are so inexpensive I would buy a new one before I paid someone $100 to fix it. We have one that cools are main level for summer. Since I live in Colorado I haven't even put it in yet, it still gets down into the 40's and 50's at night so we just open a couple windows and turn on the attic fan and it cools the main level before bed. The basement is cool pretty much most of the summer.
I used to have superhuman powers....until my therapist took them away.
HAVE YOU CLEANED THE FILTER MR HOMELESS,LOL JUST BY CLEANING THE FILTER MAKES A TON OF DIFFERENCE. IS IT OLD NEW IS THERE TREE RANCHES IN THE FAN AREA

Not sure what problem is worse..yours or mine. Mines 2 years old and smells like dirty socks when it runs sometimes. Be dammed if I know whats causing the stink.
If you run it too long it can freeze over if you live where there's high humidity. Gotta let that baby thaw out maybe.
That stink you are getting mrontario is from condensation. I know its nasty cuz my car does that sometimes lol There is supposed to be some stuff you can spray that will take care of that.
The air conditioner is 2 years old....8000 B.T.U's Kenmore. Probably should of cleaned it before putting it back in this summer.
Although my fridge is 5 months old and it's doing the same thing. Yes..it's probably mold....but the pan is dry. Sure I would like to know what can kill this mold.....I don't want to mask the smell....I rather hit the source and kill it especially if it is causing possible health issues....if that's indeed what's causing the smell...mold. Someone mentioned U.V lights?
Pull the front off it and make sure that the fins are clean. If the filter wasnt in correctly the fins could be packed with dirt. Its easy depending on the style of filter to not get it in just right.
