Re: got my first bike today so happy

Congrats! Sounds like you got yourself a good looking bike there. yeah, motosport.com is good. kneedraggers.com has a hug selection of everything under the sun. You can also order straight from Vortex @ http://www.vortexracing.com/ They're in Florida just to let ya know, so if you're like me,(in FL as well...or close), it's fast. Steer clear of [no-cut] frame sliders. They can actually do more damage than good.

On the jacket. I actually do have a spare Joe Rocket Ballistic series that I was thinking about putting on ebay if I didn't find anyone that wants it. It's in brand new condition. It's a great looking jacket with all the C.E. cert armor on shoulders, elbows/forearms, and spine pad. It's alittle big on me. It's an X-Large. You want your jacket to be tight. If you're 6'5" and 275lb, you need a double-X. Any smaller and you want an XL. I wear a Large in the jackets that go by regular size. My Joe R. Speedmaster jacket is a 46. (racing leathers come in exact size) But, the Ballistic is in great shape and looks better than the new ones. It looks racier, so it'll go faster I haven't wore it 5 times. It listed @ $229, I think it was. We'll talk if you're interested. I'll get right with ya. Like I said, it's in brand spankin new condition. Still smells new. Not one blemish. Holler back if you're interested.

You're on the right track though. Never ride without your gear. I would have some permanent road rash scars if not for my Speedmaster jacket, along with a broken arm or 2... Gloves, jacket, helmet, boots, and jeans. ALWAYS! 95 degrees outside?...WEAR YOUR GEAR! Don't be a squid rider cool guy. But that 95 degree weather is why I have to have a second,non-race leather, jacket for summer. That 1.7mm cowhide can get a little hot in the summer but it's the best in a crash.

Be careful, and safe, happy riding!

d@mn big dog!..yeah, you might need a double-XL,lol.. sorry about the speculation earlier. But, it seems every brand, even same brand, but different series, fit different. Some fit a size big. Some a size small, so it's a good idea to do what you're doing and try some out. This Ballistic seems to be a true fit. But let me know if you would like to see some pics or even give it a shot. I'm 6ft with a somewhat normal build right now. I have broad shoulders and long arms, and even if I was 220, this jacket wouldn't be as snug as it needs to be.

Another note; those mesh jackets are appealing for the summer, but they come apart in desperate times when you need them to hold up.

that is one badass looking bike. Yamaha started winning me over in '06 with that design. They took notes from Honda and ran with it.

Is this your first sportbike?..first bike period?

Re: got my first bike today so happy

right on. hell of a first bike ya got there. You want to be really 'by the book' on the break-in period. I posted a decent break in regimen somewhere in this forum. But it's a little on the technical side. If you go by the standard bike shop break-in, it'll be fine. Just don't lug the motor...like very low rpm load. That's a killer. Rings won't seat, seals won't seal...very bad for it period but extremely detrimental during break in.

That's a good bike for a first due to the low to mid range power. It's a very smooth throttle response. It's not jerky like most sportbikes. I think the slipper clutch that Yamaha has helps with that, but the slipper clutch really helps on the track. The part that probably makes new riders have to change their pants is the powerband. It is unbelievable on that model R6. 'violent' isn't a bad word for it. It's a completely different bike from 10k up (rpm). That's why it's dubbed the track bike. It has an 'all track' personality. I've got allot to learn and allot of track time and pro-schools to attend to even begin to become the rider I'd like to be, but at the same time, it's not my first rodeo, and it's gonna take some getting to know each other with my new R6 before I start to feel comfortable with it's attitude. I know that once I get it to the real track for a weekend, that I'll become much more comfident with her because I can stay in the powerband on a 2 mile 14 turn track. It's when the bike teeters in and out of the powerband that's unsettling. It's like getting smacked in the forehead with a 2x4 when it hits the powerband. It's a blast though. It's all about respect. Show 'er the respect she deserves and you'll be ah-ight.

yeah, as mr. Fuzo said; that mud flap has got to go. I always just do my own little mud flap elimination fabrication out of parts from the big contraption. It looks very clean too. Cleaner than the actual $90 eliminter kits. If you're half way handy with a hand held grinder/cut-off wheel. Which you want one of the thin cut-off wheels for cutting metal, but if your alittle crafty with your tools, you can whip up your own tag bracket and eliminate all that junk.

As for your pipe, you've probably noticed the huge 13lb cat converter in the belly of the bike. Well instead of spending $1500 on a full system just so you can eliminate the cat, there are a couple of folks that make a great mid-pipe to replace the cat on the '06-'08 R6 for a great price.
