According to a new study, the performance enhancing drug, human growth hormone (HGH) may not actually improve athletic performance at all.
Researchers have discovered that HGH does not actually improve on athletic performance. It does, however, build lean body mass, or muscle.
Researchers lookd at 44 existing articles from 27 different studies which included people aged 13 to 45.
All of these were random, controlled trials.
On average, taking HGH resulted in an increase in lean body mass of 2 kilograms.
The results of the review of the studies found that HGH may actually cause problems with athletic performance.
The study was carried out at Stanford University. Side effects from HGH were found to be swelling and fatigue.
It does not, however, improve strength, or the ability to do exericse.
