Democrats, in general, typically support social freedoms but oppose economic freedoms in exchange for big government, so they can provide "charity" for the less fortunate.
For example de-criminalizing drugs and equal rights for "homosexuals" but redistribution of wealth through government programs and class warfare through tax discrimination.


Republicans, in general, typically support economic freedoms but oppose social freedoms.
For example want to decrease taxes and have smaller government but want to impose social restrictions based on their definition of morality.

From a Libertarian perspective. The two parties have taken freedom and torn it in half - you can't vote for social freedom without voting against economic freedom and visa versa. I use to associate myself slightly more with the republican party simply because they have the position of smaller government but it appears those days might be over.

Of course if you are for social restrictions and economic regulation - then you would fall somewhere into an authoritative party; socialist, communist, fascist, etc.

i dont vote on party lines...some years i vote republican, others dem...depends on the candidates

it's so funny up here...these people are all democrats! they'll make up any reason why, if things are going bad (it's detroit...things are always bad), that it's a republicans fault. first of all, i dont remember the last time there was a republican mayor!! 2nd, the govenor is dem. she's deep into her 2nd term and these people still blaim the previous admin. for the prob's here!! give me a break!

my guess is that 80% of folks have had it passed down thru generations like religion without real thought


My present take:

Democrats: Oh me, Oh my, no one is allowed to experience any pain whatsoever at anytime, we can stop that with more laws, of all kinds.

Republicans: It's God's way or the highway. Let's all talk about and preach about tithing, social morals, etc. When we see it's other we all talk about that stuff and support it, yet, behind closed doors whatever you can get away with and not get caught is not a sin. And never ever admit defeat or that you are not perfect.

Interesting.....being from Canada I find it enlightening to see how my American cousins argue back and forth about Democrats and Republicans. First off just a few observations, there are not many Democrats on these forums, but the majority of replies in favour of the republican party seem to come from people in the more Southern or rural states where agriculture is a more dominant feature of the economy.

I also notice that much like religion, people generally vote for a party not a leader.

Now the parties themselves:
Democrats seem to focus more on the economy and less on foreign policy. As a historian I have taken note of the fact that the economy generally is stronger with a democratic president. Democrats are alot like our Liberal party here in Canada, their administrations are usually plagued with 'moral" scandals as well.....

Republicans it seems are always in power whenever a war is launched, they seem to focus on foreign policy and moral issues. I can recall quite clearly when Bush was elected back in 2000 I said that the US will be in a new war within a year.....


No political position is perfect, and people do not fit specifically into any political idea. We all have a mix of conservative and liberal ideas. Here in Canada I vote personally for the person or party that I see will have a chance of making positive changes, I do not stick with any one party.

One thing that puzzles me is the near hatred I find between Republicans and Democrats. It seems that the lines that existed that led to your civil war are still quite apparent.....I guess that why there are so many video games, books, movies that talk about a second American civil war...
