  • sleep problems

I've been experiencing a lot of sleep problems lately and are starting to mess with my daily life...interfere with my training and work in the office as I'm hyperventilating, yawning all the time etc. Around 10 - 10:30 PM I get sleepy and go to bed but keep tossing and just being all nervous for some reason. I don't think I have RLS (restless leg syndrome) but I tend to move my legs a lot when trying to sleep. I tried valerian root, melatonin extra strenght 5mg even 10mg and these don't do much for me. Should I ask my doc for Lunesta or Ambien and try those ? Anyone of you have similar problems..

btw. I am not on any cycle.

        Re: sleep problems

It really sounds like you're experiencing anxiety issues. In my ealry 20s, before there was ever mention of RLS, I would have times when relaxing or trying to go to sleep and I had to kick my legs,(more like lay on my stomach and raise my foot up and drop it over and over. It worked), or like roll back and forth. It felt like I needed to run laps or something. I would even get that feeling in my arms. I felt like I could have worked on a punching bag when it was in my arms. I guess I out grew it because it got to be less and less and then no more. Around the time that it went away is when I started seeing commercials for RLS. The first one I saw I said, "holy shyt, they've got a name for what I had." I had never heard of anyone else having those sensations. I always thought it was my nerves.
I bet that if you're having anxiety issues that it could also have some symptoms of RLS. I still think RLS is becuase of the nervous system just because of the way it works, but I don't know for sure. I never had a doctor explain the reason for RLS. Since RLS is just in the legs, the medication for it probably just acts on the messages sent to the legs..of coarse.
I still say you ought to go talk to a psychiatrist as they're the ones that diagnose anxiety and will properly medicate for it. Given that's even the issue.

          Re: sleep problems

I have had the same problem since 99. I have tried every type of drug know to man to help me sleep. Ambien works, but you better be ready to go to bed as soon as you take it. I think its like any other drug, after so long, it quits working or you have to up the dosage. I have tried restoril, over the counter sleeping pills and every other type of drug. Nothing seems to help the condition for a long period of time, just helps at the moment. I never knew about RLS, I will have to do some research. I think my problem is stress and anxiety. But anyways, the best sleeping drugs that will relax you to help you sleep are valium, ambien, and high mg of restoril. at least this is my experience.

bump for horse's advice. similar situation 2 yeras back. i'd wake up and feel like i had to do something, go somewhere, out of bed, then back to bed, tossing, turning, frustrated. i called doc for some xanax and it was a godsend. seems i was having bad memories about the ex i had tried to keep buried and the xanax helped a LOT.

                      Re: sleep problems

I think I do have anxiety issues too. I was diagnosed with Hyperventilation Syndrome and my doctor told me to use a paper bag when I'm having these attacks. WTF?? I've been having shortness of breath with frequent yawning and the need to take a deep breath all the time... and to my knowledge it could be something else but most likely it's the stress, anxiety, panic attacks etc... and she doesn't think it's any of that... and didn't give me any benzos such as xanax, valium etc... I never even asked but I will next time I see her. I've also noticed palpitations that come and go..and she suggested that I wear a heart monitor for two weeks so she can see if anythings wrong. I did EKG/ECG test and was fine and normal, blood levels fine and normal..so is oxygen...my doctor is a moron who thinks I can call a day off from work whenever I want to.
