  • Health Question ?

Guys, I need your help. All my life I've been healthy with no health problems whatsoever. I'm 28, 5'11 and about 190lbs - bf around 11-12%. 6-7 cycles done I can't exactly recall. Anyhow, lately I've been having shortness of breath, with excessive amount of yawning, like I'm trying to yawn for a few seconds but really can't. All this also comes with frequent need of deep breath. So when I yawn I hope I can do it all the way so I can take the proper full breath. These symptoms go away after a while and sometimes they are mild and sometimes severe. There was only two times that this was so serious I had to use a bag over my mouth for a few minutes to regain my breathing. With this shortness of breath when I try to get deep breath and I finish unsuccessful I then get chest pains because I'm literally forcing myself to get deep breath. Now, the FIRST time I got this it was weird. I was watching tv and all of a sudden my heart started beating very fast, then heart rate slowed down big time - after this happened I could of felt my heart skipping beats for a few seconds. I know this could be palpitations which are normal and go away and it could also be abnormal heart rhythm. I got sick of it one night because I was having this attack and went to the E.R. What this doctor (who isn't my primary care doc) told me that I have Hyper Ventilation Syndrome. I had no clue what the heck that was until I researched online and this thing was not serious at all, rather annoying. She also told me these things will go away and if they don't theres plenty of medication to treat this, so I went home. I STILL wasn't convinced so I made another appointment with my prim. care doctor so I can undergo further examinations. My doc did number of tests including the EKG/ECG one and it came with normal results so this was fine. Blood and oxygen levels were fine also. Thyroid too. Doc also noticed some very MINOR palpitations when she listened to my heart beat and suggested that I should wear a heart monitor device for two weeks and made appointment with another hospital who issues these small devices. I MISSED that appointment because of WORK - could not get a day off so I'll have to schedule another appointment again and get this device.

I never had to deal with anxiety or any panic attacks even my doctor told me it's not that all though I wish I had some xanax in hand when these symptoms occur. When I get these shortness of breaths, excessive yawning etc... I do panic and anxiety kicks in but she didn't want to prescribe xanax and I never asked for it in the first place.

I did tons of research about this online and you really get different answers all the time so it's hard to find the best most accurate answer. Some people believe its anxiety / panic attacks, some think it's acid reflux I don't suffer from heartburn but lately I feel a lot bloated in the stomach area, right in the middle ..

So you guys had any similar experience with this... or can you point me to the right direction...

    all the help/advices highly appreciated.

Well I can tell you its not acid reflex, that burns like a mofo at least it does for me and it goes from your stomach up to your throat I am more likely to say its some kind of panic attack but I would try and reschedule to get that monitor to see whats going on with your heart.

Have you been through anything tramatic before all this started to happen?

          Re: Health Question ?

You'll know when you have acid reflux. It doesn't make you yawn and have shortness of breath, and /or irregular heartbeat. You'll just have a burning sensation in your chest up to your throat like Merc said. It sucks. I had it all my life until I found Nexium. Your symptoms do sound like panic/anxiety attacks. Especially if you can regulate your oxygen levels back to normal with a bag during these "attacks".
Like dave said, keep your doctor appointment, and a small paper bag nearby.
Hope you get to feeling better.

            Re: Health Question ?

Yeah bro, I'm with the guys above and think it's possibly more of a panic attack. However, it could be a form of asthma as well. The shortness of breath, not being able to yawn, those can be symptoms of an asthma attack. There are different types of asthma and some syptoms will just come out of no where and then you are fine. The entire purpose of a yawn is to allow the body to take in more oxygen. So, when you say you keep yawning, my thoughts are your oxygen is low.

With that said, I've had experiences with shortness of breath before and was assumed to have asthma. However, once I got back into doing cardio, all the symptoms went away. So, your condition could very well be as simple as adding cardio to yoru program, if you aren't doing it already. Nothing crazy, just 20 minutes at a decent pace to get into the cardio zone (75-85&#37.

The fact two different docs gave you a clean bill of health tells me, it's probably some kind of stress or lack of cardio. Oh, one more thing, being exposed to allergies can cause asthma like symptoms in some people. Something as simple as an antihistimine can reduce this.

              Re: Health Question ?

One reason why I'm taking it easy with the training is because of this heart palpitations. I just want to be on a safe side and try to avoid adding stress to my heart. Stupid question to ask but do you guys feel your heart beat nearly all the time or it's just my bad habit trying to focus on my heart beating all the time, lol... Anyways, I'll start doing some light cardio 15-20 mins on a readmil for a week or two and then get back to my normal routine.

                Re: Health Question ?

I'd be interested in what you find out. I have had an instance where my heart felt like it stopped and another instance where it felt like I was suffocating despite the fact I was pulling air in.

I never went to the doctor because they never happened more than once.

To be honest, the only time I 'feel' my heart beat is during really heavy deads or squats or when on clen. The only weird thing I get is this light headed spaced out feeling that I get when my blood sugar gets low. Sometimes I feel like I'm on X when it gets too low. I'll be driving and then BAM....I'm in this really loopy feeling. So, I get a soda somewhere, chill and drink it. Pretty soon, I'm back to normal. But, my wife get's these things where she thinks her heart stops and starts again. I dont' know, I've never had it so I can't say but if the doc's tests came back ok, I would just be smart and maybe go with a little cardio to get your circ system moving. Even low intensity cardio like hiking can do wonders for your circ system without ever getting your HR high. It's the endurace that's important, IMO.

And, if you test out like a champ, and there is nothing wrong with you physically, you might have to go to a psychiatrist to get your meds for anxiety attacks. It's amazing what excercise will do, but if you are going through that on a regular basis, you might consider the meds. I hear panic attacks ain't no joke. First things first though and that's making sure you're physically healthy. I would go ahead and set up all appointments so I'm not waiting long between doctors.

I would recommend controlled breathing. I get the same thing, mine more cronic but not as acute as yours sounds.
