  • Computer help please!!

First the background on what I have........I have cable internet and a new computer with Vista on it & Norton. I've installed extra memory and the computer now has 2.97gb of memory so I know it's not a memory issue. Also I don't play games, download music or use the computer for anything but surfing the net.

Since I've bought it runs extremely fast when not surfing the net. When surfing the net it runs really fast on some sites, then slow as a slug on other sites. I know it's not the websites and I'll explain why below....

Here's where my problem got weird....as of a few days ago about 5 of every 10 pages I load comes up as "page cannot be displayed". If I hit refresh it shows the same thing. I can hit refresh a million times and not change. If I hit the back button, then re-go to the address it loads the page.

To top it off it that isn't weird enough, I get red x's on tons of images on sites that never used to give me any problems. Even my online exam just showed up as "page cannot be displayed" in half of the page and my exam multiple choice answer under it. I don't even understand how that was possible.

I don't know if I have some freak virus that hasn't been discovered yet, or if my computer has been hacked and is compromised. Norton has come up with nothing, spybot has come up with nothing, and I'm lost from there.

I'd also like to mention that sometimes when the internet was running real slow (before the new red x / page cannot display issue) I would hit cntrl, alt, dlt and go to task manager. I would then go to processes and click on show all processes. As soon as I did that, the page would load instantaneously. Almost as if it didn't want me to see what was holding me up.

Can someone please enlighten me on this one? I can't take my online class till I fix this shiz.

    Re: Computer help please!!

From what you've described, something is stopping certain pages from loading and the "Page cannot be displayed" is what the browser tells you if the connection attempt times out. In other words, when your browser tries to connect to a server, it gives the server at the other end a certain amount of time to answer, and if the browser doesn't detect the answer after a certain amount of time, whether it's the server not answering or something in between blocking the server's answer (sometimes firewall software can do this), it gives the "Page cannot be displayed" error message.

        Re: Computer help please!!

I'm getting it on both the firefox browser & the internet explorer 7 browser. I'll get it on every website imaginable that used to work fine. Email, forums, my online classes & exams. You name it and it pulls the same crap.

The only reason I know it's not a server issue is because we tried it with someone elses laptop on my internet connection and they had no problems. So that told me it's not the internet & it's not the servers. It's definitely something to do with my computer.

I turned off all security stuff including my firewall and tried my online classes and such. The same thing happened. red x's and page cannot be displayed. any other ideas? Can my garbage Vista program be causing this?

Is there any way to manually check my registry or my computer for recently downloaded files? Then I can delete the files and see if that works.

That definitely sounds like a security setting somewhere.

wow. It says that internet explorer isn't going to try and fix the issue, if I read that right.

                  Re: Computer help please!!

I think it's probably just a Vista glitch. Here's my rule of thumb....when a new OS comes out, I wait at least 1 year to but a pc with it so they can work out bugs like that. I can remember all the way back to when I upgraded to '98, they all have bugs at first.

If I was you, I would go to the Microsoft website and look for upgrades. My Outlook just all of a sudden stopped 'sending' but it would receive. It kept giving me this stupid error so I went and downloaded the Office 2003 SP3 and after I did that it still didn't work. So, I went to Microsoft and had it search my pc for needed updates. It found three updates I needed to make my other updates work right. After they were installed, I rebooted and no more problems.....so far....lol.

Their site will search your pc and tell you what you need. Use it, it works. More times than not it's a simple little patch that will fix the problem.

                    Re: Computer help please!!

This is the first prblem I've heard out of Vista, but I'm the same way. I'm sketchy for the first 6 months or so but updates do fix bugs. If the computer is new, swap it out. Try updating..wipe it clean and re-load just the drivers you need. I do that anyway when I get a new computer.
It could be the harddrive. Sounds very hard-driveish to me.

                      Re: Computer help please!!

I just re-booted and it did nothing. Same problems are there, except this time it's not recognizing my extra 1gb of memory I installed a few months ago.

It says I have 1.97gb when it should say 2.97gb. I have no clue what it's doing.

I've tried the update thing and I'm up to date on both windows updates & my internet security updates.

I've checked both windows settings and internet security settings and nothing there is holding me back. (I know it's not the internet security because I turned it completely off and tried the same sites and they ran just as crappy as with the security on. So that eliminated my security software as the culprit)

How do I find out if my harddrive is the problem?

What about the graphics card it came with. How do I test to see if that is working properly? It's an Nvidia Geforce 6150 LE

I have the cable internet people coming out on monday for the 100000th time. I'm having them run tests to make sure it's not on their end.

Any other ideas? This stupid crap is holding me up from my online exams. I already failed one because it gave me that damn "page cannot be displayed" crap in the middle of the exam! It's really frustrating! Especially since I can't debate with my computer and back it into a corner to feel inferior, like bush supporters

You're going to laugh about this. Whenever I was typing over the last week about my usual governement rants, my cursor would slow down. See I type 100wpm so I can fly through typing stuff. I never miss a key & when I do I know without looking that I missed one. Anyway so I'd type stuff and almost every word was misspelled, but I knew I hit the keys correctly.

So I typed slower to watch the cursor and it was actually skipping letters. As if something was purposely holding my typing back or trying to stop me from typing. I was curious if there was a keylogger or something installed to make it do such odd things. I laughed with my wife and said, guess they're trying to stop me from typing now. Not a big surprise since they've taken all of our other freedoms. Why not take the remaining free speech we have left!

Which reminds me not to get off on a different tangent. But a family friend works for a very high level of government. I debate with him everytime I see him (as you can probably imagine ). We were talking about the 'bill of rights' & the 'constitution' and how the government has violated them and robbed us of our rights. This guy literally said to me "It's just a piece of paper. Those are privelages the government extends to you, not your rights. Furthermore it's a 200 year old piece of paper that doesn't apply to today's world."

This blew my mind! As you already know I laid into him like I never have laid into anyone in my life (debate wise). It was amazing to see how scewed his thought process was. It was as if he was a brainwashed robot. I couldn't believe it. It actually gave me the chills. It basically strengthened my original thoughts, and validated what I've been arguing all along. Scary stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if the gov't f'd with my computer. But I think that part might be a little far fetched.....

                          Re: Computer help please!!

You just rebooted, or did you start in safe mode. Then through dos wipe your hard drive clean of everything and reload the drivers after reboot? I could not even do this last time my harddrive went on my desktop though, and it was acting very similar to how you described yours to be doing.

I would almost bet that if you replace the hard drive, you'd be all set. Unless the governemt is involved, lol. nah, I just think it may be the hard drive because it sounds so similar to my last hard drive episode.
To be stereotypical, I wouldn't even trust the cable guy to diagnose the modem. It sounds like you've already ruled that out anyway by testing another laptop on it. Have you contacted your computer company's support? They should be able to tell you right quick.
