my sons best friend commited suicide 2 weeks ago. he spent all day hanging with my son then went home that night and in the middle of the night got out a gun from his fathers locked gun closet and shot himself in the side of the head. they are not sure how he got the cabinet unlocked? he was only 20 yrs old
he left a note and all it said was he was going to finally join his friend who had died in a car accident a few years ago. it appears he never got over the loss of this close friend of his and finally without any warning took his own life.
it has hit my son pretty hard cause he keeps wondering if he could have done anythign that day to stop him?

cousin shot himself last year, 34, 3 kids
two weeks ago a far cousin killed himself, 22

I lost my dad and a few frineds that way, it totally sucks. So, I will tell you my story. I was 21 when my dad committed suicide. Instead of getting councelling, I tried to deal with it myself. First, it was drinking, then it became rec drugs and that cycle lasted 5 years before I finally got into so much trouble that I had to go to boot camp for 3 months. I was arrested several times during those 5 years. Once at boot camp, I was forced to get councilling and that changed my life. I finally got closure with my dad's death and was able to move on. I just wish I would have been smart enough to get councilling after it happened. I could have avoided a lot of hurt in my life and the lives of those around me. I don't regret what happened because it made me a much stonger man today, but I do regret the things I lost because of poor judgement. So, my advice is that you get him councelling. He is about the same age I was and I would hate to see him not get closure with this and go through what I went through. Most people do not survive that life style. I lost over a dozen close friends due to suicide, overdose and prision time.

suicide always ends the pain of the one who commits the act but leaves a lifetime of pain and questions of those left behind and guilt for those closest to them, like your son examining over and over the last conversation, wondering if they should have seen a sign spmething was wrong, or if it was something they said, didn't say, etc. Very sad. I wish the best for your son and thankful he has a dad like you who will be there for him and get him help if need be.

sorry to hear this pin. all's ya can do is keep reinforcing the ideal that there's noway for your boy to know this. ther's no way he coulda done anything about it. it's not his fault. be there for him, as i'm sure you are, and he'll come around. i wish you all the best...
