There is plenty of money in this line of business, but when that extra cash is not so readily available, people aren't so willing to spend on my products.

Yes unemployment rates are at low levels, but wages are also at low levels. As wages continue to dwindle, prices of things continue to rise.

As for undercutting everyone in the industry, I'm one of the most inexpensive around, but carry the exact same name brand products as my top competitors, and actually have extra's I add for free that they don't even offer. So it's not my product, prices, or advertising that's off. It's the market is hurting from the rise in prices from gasoline!
my uncle is a contractor down in you area. he's got one of the best rep's i've ever seen. never, EVER advertizes. been there 30yrs doing pool cages, screen rooms, remods, ect...he says the same thing. his clientel is "recession proof" but they are still holding off, or down sizing the projects. he's got work, but it's off. he thinks that the rise and falling gas prices just makes them (clients) nevous and they hold off...i dont know, but they (customers) aint buying cars up here!!! new, used, gas misers or guzzlers!

That makes sense. It really struck me when both states slowed at the same time for me, as soon as the prices hit $3.00 a gallon +.

The majority of people don't have extra money because gas has caused a domino effect. Gas takes from their extra money, extra money spent on food since prices of food has gone up, energy bills going up, and so on and so forth.

If you do the math most people are probably losing upwards of $300-$500 a month on extra expenses due to gas prices. Most of my customers save up a few months and buy from me. Now that the extra money they used to save is gone, So is my income!
Here's the thing DJ, it's not the gas directly that's causing probs in your area. You guys are getting killed with home insurance and other stuff and I think the slight raise in gas is the straw that broke the camels back. My overall gas spending is up, but not the much and I drive everyday. Now, my dad on the other hand who owns his own 18 wheeler and is an independant driver he spends $800 a week on fuel. So, for him, it sucks but the company he works for, Sherwin Williams, pays the dirvers a fuel expense to compensate for that. But, that's a big company and they can afford to do that when you are talking about the independants. Their employeed drivers don't get it and they get a bigger tax deduction.

I think your state is just getting ripped in several areas and since gas is up and down it's easy to think it's the fault of gas. In actuality, it the culmination of many things and gas is just the most recent. Hell, after last year, my health insurance jumped from $325 to $397 a month. That's a much bigger blow than gas because I can conserve gas, I can't do anything about my health insurance costs. They are what they are and if I change, they my wife and I will ahve all these 'pre-existing' conditions. So, we HAVE to stay.

Now, wrap your ehad around this for a second and let me know what you think. I just read today that last year big oil made approximately $61 billion in profits, yet, our government made $71 billion in taxing gas. So, who is actually making more money? That's right, our government. And this is both parties, remember John Kerry wanting to raise gas tax? What cracks me up the most is our government points the finger at big oil when it's them who take more money out of our pockets than big oil. Gas tax! What a bunch of BS. That's is one reason why gas is so high. And you know what, no matter how high or low gas goes, the government carges the same amount. So, when gas was lower, like around $2 a gallon, our government was really brining in way more money than big oil did in profits.

wow...you almost sound like your sticking up for big oil!!..noooo, say it aint so, joe! the tax sux, but it gets spread around! local, state, federal. for roads, schools, whatever...atleast it goes (some) back into the community...atleast it goes into the pot! big oil proffit, beside shareholders, goes to record making bonuses for executives!! why not refineries??? why not transportation for there goods?? why do they not update, outdate machinery?? gas tax? i can live with...some of it will bennifit me. oil companies? thats just greed...it's past fair proffit, it's into criminal activities..these companies set the prices as a whole, they may fluctuate pricing here or there so the diff. companies dont APPEAR to be in culusion (sp?), but they are!
