the simpilest way to put t is our troops cannot tell who is a innocent civilian or a militant until it is too late.they do not follow the geneva convention laws, which require those engaged in war to wear a uniform.its hard when you dont know if the guy on the corner is who you are to be protecting or fighting until they set a road side bomb off and blow your whole convoy up
Yep, just like the Revolutionary war. The Red Coats never knew if the men were famers or militants until it was too late. It's the same thing and it's an impossible war to fight, because like you said, you don't know until it's too late.

When bin laden turned muslim around 20 years of age, Russia invaded Afganistan, a holy muslim country. That set off the alarm and many muslim fighters came to afganistans defense, remember, ussr was against religion.
Bin Laden really did not fight. He set up all these behind the line support camps. While he was setting up all these camps, he said to himself, hmmmmm, might as well get everyone's name and number and contact info. Thus, that was the inseption of al quida, just hey let me get everyone's name and number that are fighting the good muslim fight.
He also, because his father owns a huge construction company, had access to much heavy equipment and money. Which he liberally spent to help his muslim brothers.
So, why is he pissed at us. The us of a, shoveled all kinds of guns and ammo into the afganistan war, a constant supply line for their fighters. Yet, we did this thru the black market, we would not do anymore publicly than denounce the invasion. We did not help them fight.
What our goal was, was to dishevel the USSR, to bring it down to it's knee's. So, we shoveled guns and money and supplies, just enough to the fighters to keep USSR in a pickle for ten years, which ultimately helped bring down the ussr.
Of course, all's it did was piss bin laden and his boys to no means, because, in his mind we had the power to stop the ussr at anytime, and we chose not too. Thus, in his mind, we let his brethen die, and disavow muslims.

To answer your question directly. Our militaries tactic, up to this point, has been to keep cutting the weed down, when they need to focus on the destroying the root (Iran).
I don't care how many people in Iraq hate America, if they don't have the resources to attack us (RPG's, explosives, vehicles, money, etc.), their hate cannot express itself with dead Americans. They are being funded and supported by an outside source - attack the root and its over. Bush just doesn't have enough support left to do what would work - attack Iran.
I support Ron Paul on everything but two issues and his foreign policy is one of them but out of all the candidates he supports freedom the most, by far.
I thought the war ended back on May 1, 2003 when Bush declared a end to combat and said "Mission Accomplished?"
Anyways as everyone else said this is a different kind of war. Tanks and amo will not aide in ending this war.
This war is about teaching arabs all arabs don't mess with the USA. We proved we can walk all over them no matter where they are. If I was in charge we would have left right after we finished kicking their arab ass. And left them with cleaning up the mess. I don't care if they kill each other.

We cannot "win" because the insurgents are waging a guerilla war. These "cells" are not organized, and do not even communicate. They are comprised of many groups from several muslim countries that have only one thing in common - that is to prevent and American victory in Iraq. REally, even if they were a single cohesive group, their best chance for success (preventing American sucess) is to blend into the general population as the vietcong did in 'Nam. They do not have the numbers or fire power to face us in battle. So they attack here and there from the shadows, hoping to prolong the war and erode our determination. This is not a winning plan though - the real strategy is to intimidate the locals into supporting the insurgency - or at least compliance - and to use the international media crush against the American army. They fully know that the American people shrink from the images of war, and weild tremendous political influence. If the insurgency prolongs the war, the American public will eventually demand a withdrawal of troops. They plan to use democracy against us, and it is definitely having an impact.
To answer your question though, we cannot gain a traditional victory because it is very difficult to defeat an enemy that blends into the local community. IT is very difficult to tell friend from foe.
