  • Pec tear!

Man, I was shifting my weight around last night in bed and I posted up on one arm and I felt some pain in the middle of my left pec where it meets the sternum. This morning I get up and there's a lump in the middle of my pec near the sternum. When I flex the pecs together you can see where part of it tore from the sternum. I'm so pissed! I'm going to drop in on my PT guy and ask him to look at it because there is no way I can go through another surgery. This only looks like part of it tore so I imagine it should be able to heal in time, I just don't know how long I should give it. What a set back. Here I was gaining some great ground on chest developement and now this crap. But, the weird part is there is no bruising. That I don't understand. I've had enough injuries to know bruising should be there.

I'll let you know what the PT guy says. Also, I have chest at the gym today so that will tell me alot. If it hurts at all with the light stuff, I know I got problems.
I used to have superhuman powers....until my therapist took them away.

you are on GH right? Maybe just a frog aka charlie horse..I dont know what the correct name for it is but i dont see how it can be torn from that buddy..Please hit us back here after you train and let us know how it goes..You try to put a heat pad on it or some ice hot ..maybe put some muscle rub before you train and then warm up real good for like 15 minutes or so.. Im interested to see how this pans out

See, that's what I thought too, I'm on GH, NPP and EQ which ALL increase collagen synthesis so I'm hoping it's not a tear but it looks like one the way the muslce is balled up. It's a small area though. My wife said it would hurt pretty bad if it was a tear but when she looked at it and I showed her where the muscle line along the sternum had changed she said I did something but she can't tell what. It's the lack of bruisning that has me stumped because you can see the hole along the line of the sternum where this part of the muscle used to be. Like I said, it's not a big area so I'm pretty sure it would just heal. Of course, like you said, maybe it is a frog and the swelling is making me 'think' the muscle line has changed. I'll try some ice later and see how that goes. I've just got too much going on this morning. Thanks.

                Re: Pec tear!

Ok, here's a partial update....I went in and hit chest and back today and I had no probs on bench, none on incline and none on decline.....but....when I grabbed the db's to do flies that's when it hurt. So, I have no damn idea what I think. I didn't have time to go by my PT's office so I wasn't able to get any ideas from him. So, basically, I don't know what to think right now. since it is at the sternum, I guess it makes sense that it wouldn't hurt on the bb presses because more emphasis is on the outer part. I'm thinking it's a minor tear and once I used an exercise that put the emphasis on the sternum part it was able to be aggravated. But, on the good note, if it doesn't hurt on BB presses then I can do chest. I did not try any db presses so I have no idea about those. I'm going to try to run my my PT's office tomorrow but I have a very busy day so it's a long shot. I do have a Chiropractor appointment and he's pretty good with soft tissue stuff too so I will ask him about it too. It could very well just be a minor strain that has some inflamation and just needs to settle down. Based on past experiences, if I have inflamation it makes even the most simple tasks bothersome, depending on the degree of inflamation. It's just weird how it's all in one little ball in the same place I felt it when I was moving around last night. It sucks to get old. lol I remember seperating two ribs from my sternum in a HS wrestling match and I was back on the mat in a few weeks. Now a days, I would be out for a few months.

Sorry to hear about his njury. Just becareful anddon't do anymore damage.
From the way you describe it, it sounds more like you may have pulled it than tore it. Hopefully it will be gone in a few days and you will back to pumping the heavy iron again
Push it, Pull it, Rack it. Repeat untill wide!!

Take nothing I say as serious, What do I know, I sell water!!

                      Re: Pec tear!

^ yep, the fact I could go heavy on bb presses is leading me to think it's not torn but maybe a sprain or like you said a frog. I got another bro who used to be a PT and he said what you said, he doesn't see how it could tear from there. It would take one hell of a force to pull the pec from the sternum. He said it's possible, but very unlikely so I'll just keep an eye on it and if it gets bigger then I'll have to go to the doc. Even when I touch it, it's sensitive but nothing agonizing so who knows. Trust me, I would love for it to be nothing more than a frog so that's what I'm hoping for.

I don`t know exactly what is happening with your condition but I gotta figure, a torn muscle has got to hurt like ripping flesh from your bones right? Yet, you hit chest already... not saying that your well- in fact you should def go see a doc but I think maybe it`s not a tear. Or at least that`s what I`m hoping. Keep us posted T-dog.

                          Re: Pec tear!

I actually think that I did the exact same thing a few years back. It really started to hurt from doing cable crossovers because it really emphasized my inner chest. I just couldnt do decline or dips for a while. I still have to be careful with it and I can still feel it every now and then. I still go very heavy on bench though. Incline is no prob. And I usually only do incline flies so it doesnt bother me. I can do dips now, im just careful and only use body weight for burnout sets. The only thing that really makes it hurt still is heavy decline exercises so I pretty much avoid them. I had no bruising on my chest either, just sharp pains when it happened. Now i make sure i stretch pretty well before i do bench and i do like 4 or 5 warm up sets before going heavy.
