  • gym purchase

After I graduate from school my plan is to purchase a decent fixer gym in a great location and turn it into a gold's gym. I would like to change the marketing and try and turn it around hoping to obtain more members.

MY QUESTION IS... During the summer I would like to work in a gym to get experience and knowledge of owning and operating A gym. WHAT JOB SHOULD I DO? SALES? TRY WORK NEXT TO A MANAGER? FRONT DESK?

IF ANYONE HAS ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS IM OPEN FOR THEM. BEEN RESEARCHING THIS IDEA FOR ABOUT 3 YEARS NOW. TIME IS GETTING CLOSE.

    THANKS,

    HARR BALL

You could start by seeing if they have a manager training program to learn the business. I'm sure you could also learn alot by doing some research on your own, but nothing replaces ojt!

Definitely see if you can a job as close to the manager as possible. Usually when you open a store that is part of a franchise, they make you take training so that you know the culture of that franchise. Try contacting World Gym corporate hQ and see if they have any training available.

its not a rocket science but it also aint that easy..most of the work involves promoting your gym and being unique than others.. also man..running the gym is alooooooot of work.. you have to be around 24/7 .. not my favorite taste.

i am with SupaSai. A franchise will have a plan laid out for you most likely but for a Golds the dues aint cheap. I say if that is what is in your heart then you go for it full steam ahead and dont let anyone tell you not to or that it takes too much time or you cant or anything like that. There are lots of folks that look back and wish they had tried more bro, just do it. You CAN!

yes it will not be easy. A lot of time will be spent, but it will all pay off. After 5 years or so the gym will run itself, after i can get enough members. I just need to show up every other day to make sure its runs smoothly.

I know someone who started off with 1 golds gym in hawaii. he purchased it at age 19, he was given 40,000 from inheritence. Now he owns 6 golds gym and it opening another. All he does is drive to all of them to make sure everything is going smoothly. Guy in a millionaire. He just lives off a residual income.

Why work at some job where u bust ur ass every single day and get capped off at a certain income. Now matter how hard u work u eventually get capped somewhere. U bust ur balls at owning something and it will grow and the rewards could be phenomenal. yeah u might fail but hey at least u tried and werent fuking miserable. I love being around in the fitness environment.

I hate working in the corp. world. It so phugin cut throat. everyone stabs u in the back and managment treats u like a piece of trash, No thnx. They can shove it up there a$s. they make there 80k a year work 12 hour days 6 days a week and never make a cent more. not for me. When u own something the sky is the limit. I could own multiple gyms and have other people run them.

I guess seeing my dad busting his as$ doing construction making decent money has made me realize. He hates the poeple hes works with and the people above him. Screw working 4 other people. Work 4 urself and make it what u want and love what u do.

im with u on the corporate thing, totally against it (major corps)..Ive worked at a gym and if you own it its tons of work but if the location is right you can make money..I would work in sales which usually does front desk too, so you get customer service experience and sales ideas/experience..Also establish a relationship with the gym owner..might as well get a PT certification too, its not too hard..You can do anything you want, just put your time in and ask alot of questions.

Talk to Space Mountain i think hes the one who has a gym on this board-

Dude, owning a gym is a tough business, but if you have the desire you can do it. A good friend owns the gym I train at now and I hear the stories but in the end if you happy that is all that matters. But do realize many of us make 80+K a year and don't work 12 hour days 6 days a week..I average 40-45 hrs per week tops and some weeks even less..it can be done, just depends on your job location and the type of work you do.
