Amazon River...

I watched this documentary on the Amazon River.

Did you know that even though the water looks all dirty and brown, chemically the water is purer than most tap water in the US?

Also, the river hits the ocean with so much force and pushes so much fresh water into the ocean that sailors and/or fishermen can drink fresh water right from the ocean up to 200 miles out. Can you believe that? I can't even fathom the amount of water that must take for the ocean to be drinkable up to 200 miles out to sea. That's crazy.

Makes sense. I never knew that though. Quite interesting. The difference is we pollute everything. That's why our water isn't as pure. The Amazon is huge and doesn't even have half the population we do surrounding our fresh waterways.

I'd love to go on an excursion there that would kick Arse! I got done reading the novel "the testament" and it take place in brazil in similar waters...other then malaria it would be fun!

Well, we do polute our water some but the worst thing is the recycling of it and all the chemicals used to make it consumable, that's what is so bad. But, you are right, there is absolutly no industry along the river and the people respect it as it is their source of life.

No doubt! A three month trip to be free to just travel Brazil would be killer! But, wife and child makes that an impossbility for me. Brazil is one of the coolest countries with their beaches, mountains, rain forest, rivers, waterfalls, they have all kinds of cool stuff. But yeah, gotta avoid the malaria. lol I would have like 10 cans of that bug repellant on me at all times. lol

Just imagine how much water that dumps into the ocean. People think the ice caps melting are going to over flow the oceans yet the Amazon has been dumping who knows how many billions of gallons into the ocean for how long? And, the ocean stays the same. The cycle of nature is just amazing. You would thing the sources providing that much water would run out, but they don't. It's amazing how nature just knows how to balance things. Sure, there are reactions to imbalances but just think about how much water just the Amazon along dumps into the ocean, then add up all the other rivers world wide. That's a lot of evaporation.

i saw it too. the stuff that turns the water brown is called tannin and is from the dead leaves.

Funny you brought up industry..Did you see that Hunter and Hunted show about shark attack outbreaks in Brazil. A huge cattle plant was upstream duming thousands of gallons of blood into the river even though it was suppose to go into tanks. Scientists were claiming the blood in the water was the cause of the excessive attacks in the beach area near the mouth of the river. The city was called Recife. Supposedly the blood brought in a higher than normal density of sharks with higher aggression. I can't remember if it was debunked but I think they found out the the factories year of operation corresponded with the years of the attack outbreaks.

Heck yeah, I'm addicted to Discovery and History Channel. The Barbarians thing the History Channel does is cool to watch. I think I've learned more from those two channels than I did in History and Science class in 12 years of schooling.
