Only car that has good reputation is the Jetta, but I've hear bad stories about them so IMO I would stay away from VW.

My fiancee's mother has a 2001 Jetta she bought new and still has it, but has had several problems throughout.

well I don't care how nice is 'may' be, I wouldn't spend anything on a car with practically 300k miles on it.

How much do you drive a day?

Look on Autotrader and search for the cars I listed above and see what happens.

That Nissan is the kind of car you would buy as a second car, or a toy you wanna buy and put work and money into, maybe even race it.

Automatic Accord, would be very easy on the wallet and a breeze to drive in the city. Stay away from Benz or Beamers because when they break, they break your account too. My parents had a BMW 325 for years, but parts cost a lot. &100 for spark plug wires ?? $50 for a coolant tube ??

well the one plus to the beamer would be that momma has connections so while it would still cost some money to fix it would not cost as much as a "random" place would charge...

this is just so frustrating b/c dad wants to get me another car b/c mine is 13.5yrs old now but with a limit of only $5000 I am finding virtually nothing "newer"...he says I need something to get me through a couple of years until I can afford something better...which must mean some magical job is going to appear by 2009...I haven't found it yet so why he thinks I'll magically find it in two years I don't know...but besides that, if he's looking for something to just last me a couple of years then I need to just stick with the car I have now...seems kind of pointless to get a car older than the one I have now, don't you think?

i was a technician for Honda,Acura and Lexus. I say for the money you cant beat a honda. for longevity you want a 5 speed but if you cant or dont drive a stick then auto is cool. I am thinking 5k might get you an OK civic. If you find something in Honda or other that I am familiar with I will be happy to tell you if they had any common problems. Most hondas dont have much, older V6 model accords had some trans issues but so do lot of lexus. Anyway, good luck Diva,if I can help holler. if the car has 80-120k on it, make sure they have replaced the timing belt.

Honda, period. They are just better built and offer more affordable options than Toyota IMO.

If you need to drive something new for the next 2-3 years, why not just lease something. Since you drive low milage and you have the money to put down, you could drive something nice and brand new for the lease period, then get rid of it when the time comes. Unless you don't want the car payments.
