  • Insurance HELP!!???

Ok so as you all know my wife is pregnant. I think I'm kind of screwed though. We don't have health insurance at all and we don't qualify for state aid because I make to much. So what can I do? Has anyone gone through this before?

    Re: Insurance HELP!!???

I'm not absolutely sure about this but I don't think that the pregnancy will be covered if you get ins. because it's a pre existing condition. You should call around and see what the agents in your area tell you, beyond that I really don't know what else you guys can do.

I'm not an insurance expert....but if you did get insurance right now....she is not that far along that she possibly could be covered. I mean she is only 4-5 weeks. That is only one missed period....now if she was like 4 or 5 months...it might not be covered. but again, it may depend upon the ins company and type of coverage. If you do shop around for ins...dont say she is pregnant...just simply ask about maternity coverage, etc.

I do own my own company byron but I work for myself. I don't have health insurance because I chose to put more money into advertising, and more efficient tools for my business rather than get myself health insurance. Plus my wife is finishing nursing school in November so we were waiting for insurance from her when she gets a nursing jobs. Usually people in the medical field have the best coverage. So guess that didn't work to well.

Plus I don't qualify for state aid because I'm making to much money this year. But if pregnancie's cost $15 - $24k it's going to decimate my bank account! I don't want to have a kid, and have no money to raise it, or to put into a savings account for it's retirement & college.

I would call up the companies and find out if they will at this time cover the birth partially or fully. If not then you may just have to pay out of your own pocket.
If you make a lot of money you'll have money to raise the child along with family support Im sure.
And I wouldn't worry about the retirement and college thing right away, when you have the money to do that, then do it. These kind of situations sometimes require sacrifices. My daughter is 5 and I just started putting money away for her future. My money has been tight for a long time and I have my own company as well.

Most health insurances have what they call pre-existing conditions, or may not even cover her since she was already preganat b4 she enrolled. Call this # 352-378-1321 It is for Farm Bureau group Insurance for Blue Cross Blue Shield. This is a "group insurer" and im sure they have a waiting period, but you can ask if there is Blue Cross Blue Shield # that is not a group. There is really no cheap way around this. If you happen to find a good insurer expect to pay a high monthly or quarterly rate. You need to do alot of leg work on this. Look in the yellow pages and start making some calls.

                      Re: Insurance HELP!!???

I just spoke to my HR director on healthcare insurance, and basicly he said that each different state has their own set of waiting periods. Say in NV you may have to wait 365 days in FL it may only be 6month, some may not even cover a preg that was existing b4 you are enrolled. The thing here Dig, is that you have to select which healthcare coverage you want using either the yellow pages or the internet. I suggest the internet, because you can type in Tampa, FL healthcare providers, or Tampa, FL healthcare and then see what comes up. Id stick to the major carriers like BCBS or maybe HAP or whatever is the major healthcare providers in you area. I have BCBS, because you do not have to get any refferals to see a specfic Dr. If i make an appointment with a specialist, i don't have to go to a "primary" dr to get a refferal. I can go to any drs i want. Main thing is to ask the proper questions ie. Waiting periods, specfic to pregnancy, are they an hmo, do you want drug coverage? if so do the have that, also raising you deductable will lower your premium, but you will have to pay higher upfront for services. I never did like managed care, because you have to get refferals every time you switch drs. If you can find an insurer that will cover her after six months or less i would jump on it. The process of getting insured can take over a month, so you really need to dilligently work on this now. Main thing is to make sure you tell them you are looking for independant coverage, meaning you are paying for the insurance yourself and not an employeer, because most of these ppl that are at these call centers for healthcare think in a box, lol!

I worked in healthcare for 6 years and also with many insurance companies. Each state seems to have it's own exclusions for pre-existing conditions. I know for sure that any HMO's do not have pre-existing clauses. Meaning, if you or your wife were to get even a part-time job that offered health benefits, and one of the company plans that was offered was HMO, than you could enroll when eligble and the pregnancy would be covered at any time you enrolled. FUZO and I had this issue when I got pregnant with our first daughter and I was going to get a job at Starbucks ,part-time cause they offered great benefits. Instead we just paid COBRA for 18 months, which was outrageous! I know that money is a huge factor, but believe me, it will all work out. You have been blessed with this pregnancy and things will be okay in the end. Congrats!

Generally HMOs are more lenient. Just make sure your drs are in network with the particular HMO or you will have to pay more out of pocket.
