The guy is 45. And to answer your questions about Japanese manners, this is WAY out of line.

IF (and even then he`d still be kinda out of line) I was an 18 year old part time worker moving boxes in a wharehouse.... comes in 1 hour late stinking like alcholol... well that probably happens occasionally in Japan. BUT the Japanese are really paticluar about touching other adults. Shaking hands is a novelty to them and sometimes older women are a little nervous. Hugging almost never happens in this country even in families.

But from man to man... out of the question.

Hell, the reason I didn`t immedately tee off on him when he did it was that I was so shocked that it even happened - it was like I couldn`t believe it had actually happened.

Superdog, tell him konjo nashi and follow up with (sp?) bukkuro shite yaru, it seems to get a rise out of the japanese guys who spar with us sometimes =)
It's tuff dealing with japanese on their own soil. Obviously telling him that wasn't polite will instantly get an apology wether he's sincere or not. I'd have *****slapped him myself, i don't have a short fuse but when you put your hands on me the end has already started, i don't have any tolerance for that, so i'd have been out of a job =)

Hey Superdog,

I agree that physical contact between Japanese adult men is unusual but among your students I bet you see lots of head slapping. I have witnessed many Japanese teachers slapping their students heads.
