  • computer worm problems, need help

i have a darn computer worm and my anti-virus programs will not get rid of it. they keep reminding me of it but dont do anything else about it. i keep getting a pop-up that tells me that the last few emails sent contained similar material and it asks me what i want to do.
anyone have any suggestions before i bring in a computer expert to look at it? i was going to get the geek squad to come here but wanted others opinions first. i have way to much stuff on the computer to reboot it off the original disk right now and wanted to see if anyone had a way to get rid of it before i start to copy all my files to disk. your help would be appreciated. thanks...pin

Well..the last few emails have similar content?? same subject or same words in the body??

Did ant-virus actually detect a worm or just letting you know that the last few emails you sent were similar?

^Bump for Lily. If you have sent several emails containing the same message,
your anti- virus program will give you a warning.
If this is not the case, try a system restore. This can be done by clicking Start,Help and Support, System Restore. Choose a date prior to the problem and restore the system. You will not lose any information and it should solve your problem.
Push it, Pull it, Rack it. Repeat untill wide!!

i tried the system restore and it didnt work. all that did was erase some programs i had loaded but it didnt get rid of the virus.
it gives me the warning because the virus is mass emailing from my computer. i am not emailing anyone at all.

Quit lookin at so much porno!

Haha, just kidding. Try programs like "Hijackthis" and some of the free virus scans available over the internet. If you do use "Hijackthis" make sure to have a computer knowlegable friend come over to help you with the results.

Yeah no shit. I have hijackthis and my buddy put it on for me back when I had internet explorer. Its kinda confusing I never use it now, just use Mozilla Firefox as your explorer and you dont get pop ups or any other crap.

Try booting in safe mode and running a full system scan while in safe mode.

To boot in safe mode, restart your system, but as soon as you see the screen that shows a logo for your system's manufacturer, start hitting the F8 key repeatedly. This will bring up a startup options menu. Select "Safe mode" and press Enter. After the system starts, a dialog box will open stating that you are running in safe mode, click OK when you see it, then run a full system scan.

After the full scan, the program should tell you that you have an infected file that can't be repaired and tell you where it is if it can't delete it automatically. Locate the file, delete it manually, empty your recycle bin, then re-boot in normal mode and run another full system scan.

PM me if you need any additional help - good luck....

Re: computer worm problems, need help

Sometimes virus softwares wont remove worms. If you know the name of the worm then go online and Google it. You will find links on how to remove it. Print up the directions on removing it. Also, you will probably have to turn off your system restore and reboot in safe mode. Then, once the worm is gone, you will need to turn system restore back on once you are back in normal mode.

You can also download virus and worm removal tools for free from Symantec - the makers of Norton Anti-Virus

Go to http://www.symantec.com and search for removal tools
