In general, I think an education is always worth the expense. Since this is an uncommon major, I think the public vs private debate is less relavent - especially if you have a problem with "going away" for school. But I will say that a "name" school will get you in the door. It won't determine your success, but it will probably create more opportunities. As far as paying it back, you just need to finance it into a workable payment. Most people who go to college have big student loans they are paying back. And most people I know do not own a house until they are in their late 20's at the earliest. Of course this depends on you locale, but don't let that kind of stuff determine your career path. Good things come to those who are smart AND work hard. Good luck with your decision.
