Well, I bought 2001 BMW M3 few days ago... and it died justone day after I got the keys. The dealer told me it was some minor electrical problem that needed to be fixed - but I told him no thanks and I returned his car.
I just got a 2001 Audi S4 2.7T Tiptronic it runs a thousand times better.
Go to Edmunds.com and read the consumer reviews, I came real close to buying an Audi A4 1.8T. After reading the reviews I said not only no, but "hell no!" It could just be the A4 that gave people porblems as I didn't read about the S4. Regardless, I'd be very careful about buying an Audi or other European car associated with Volkswagan. Check the maintainence regards.

I`ve heard from many people that they have tons of problems with their A4`s but only 1.8T. That particular one comes - manual with turbo and for some reason they always break down, don`t know why.
Now newer everything after 2000 Audi A4 2.8 which is rare and hard to find people have been really pleased. Audi A4 and S4 not a lot of difference. Lookwise they look the same..its the engine that is tweaked - more power added to it.
Most German cars if they are manufactured here in the states or some other country chances are they will suck - now if your car is made in Germany and is actually shipped here - thats another story.
s4>a4 it isnt a comparison the a4 motor is similar to the jetta 1.8 t which is weak stock from the factory. there is a guy on an import site i frequent who has a twin turbo s4 running low 11s on street tires. that is scary fast
