If there are military bases then it might have been a jet breaking the sound barrier a little too close to the ground. We have an Army base, two Air Force basses, the Air Force Academy and Norad in my home town and we hear jet all the time. When they get too close to the ground and hit the afterburners it's loud as hell. Very loud. However, they usually don't do that crap at night around here. At least, you don't hear it as much.
