Well i went to the doctors yesterday and he confirmed that i have a small umbilical hernia. so i told him to operate it asap becouse i'm doing another show in May and he refused. said it was too small to do anything. he told me to continue to train hard and that it was'nt dangerous. Its the size of a penny and round like a small grrape. i just think that he wanted to brush me off cause he was so busy at the office. what do you guys think? should i continue to train hard? i'm wearing a belt all the time now even for bicep haha but dont want anything bed to happen. maybe I should get a second opinion

      Re: hernia problem

I had a hurneia surgery about 1.5 months ago for an inguinal hernia that was about the same size maybe just a touch bigger that I got from squats. My doc. who is a well known sports surgeon, told me that even if it is that small and you are active (weights, sports, job, etc...) to get it fixed. If left unattented to the hernia can and probaly will get bigger and then you will have to get cut instead of the laproscopic surgery. You dont want to get cut because the recovery time of a surgery like that is 2 months at the earliest for most its longer. I got the laproscopic surgery done and was back in the gym 3 weeks after doing sit ups and weights @ 90%. Recovery wasn't bad at all.

        46,

        Yes wear a belt,

No, it won't go away without surgery

and The harder you train the bigger it will get

My doc told me that most sports hernia's as he called them start at small in size and gradually increase in size the more workload they are put under. It is a tear or weak spot in your abdominal wall that lets your intestines protrude through into your abdominal cavity. If left unattended for a very long time eventually the intestines that are pushed through the tear will die from a lack of blood and have to be cut out. Hernia's in the very lower part of the abdomen can drop down into the scrotum and once again if left unattended for a long time can cause the testicle to die from a lack of blood.

just to keep things clear before this thread goes any further:
inguinal hernia - in the scrotum
umbilical hernia - in the belly button
so yeah, i can see get surgery for an IH, but i'm reading up on UHs right now and i'm getting mixed info. some places say it will probably go away. some places say that the old style of surgery causes tension that will weaken the muscle around the hernia, so they recommend a special surgery where a mesh is implanted. now i'm confused.

              Re: hernia problem

The surgery that I got was the new laproscopic surgery where they put the mesh in. My doc. told me "once again mine was inguinal not umbilical" that the old style of surgery where they cut (scapal, incision and repair) is only used for bigger tears in the abdominal wall. Im pretty sure that most people now end up getting the mesh planted in the abdomen because they catch the hernia's early and the doctors insist on the surgery before any further complications arise.

i know bro. but common sense tells me the same thing as you said. it's not going to just magically go away without surgery.

                      Re: hernia problem

I, also, have a very small hernia directly above the belly button. Don't remember actually getting it. Doesn't hurt. I've had it for well over a year or maybe longer and it has not enlarged (yet). Just noticed it one day in the shower. Have not went to Dr. yet, though. Still train very heavy with no problems. 1600 on leg presses, 600 on deads, ect....

It's cool to push the guts back inside, though.

I've only just discovered the whole "pushing the intestine back in" thing this morning. I don't think I'm cool with it yet. Dammit. I don't have health insurance. G Dammit Eff Eff Effing S! I think I'm going to keep on working out anyway, maybe just lay off the heavy box squats for a while.

i had umbilical surgery this last summer, it was aobut eh size of a grape and i could push it in and out, i had it surgery and got gortex(sp) mesh put in. recovery was about 4-5 days until i felt better. i mean i could walk around but was just sore, i went back to work in a week and back to the gym, they told me 4 weeks, and i have never had a problem with it. i have a small scare it traces the top of my bellon button. it was not a very painful process. i hopoe this sheds some light ont he topic. u had my done cause i couldnt quit playing with the thing and it didnt look very good.

I HAD SURGERY IN AUGUST FOR AN UMBILICAL HERNIA IT HAPPENED AT WORK THEY GOT IN AND IT WASNT AS BAD AS THEY THOUGHT SO THEY DIDNT DO THE MESH I THINK I TOOK ABOUT 6 WEEKS OFF TOTAL TRAINING AND THEN WENT LIGHT FOR TWO WEEKS AND NOW IM STRONGER THEN EVER. IF U HAVE A PROB THAT REQUIRES SURGERY AND THAT DOC WONT DO IT GO TO ANOTHER. ITS COMPLETELY IRRESPONSIBLE OF HIM TO TELL U TO KEEP GOING HEAVY TOO.
