Need suggestions about smoker

I bought a new condo, it over looks the pool and small lake. It has a fountain. When you open the windows and balcony doors you can hear the water and it is very relaxing. Plus now it is fall and the weather is cool whole the air is crisp. I love to open up the windows and doors so the sound and fresh air comes in………………………except I have 1 big f’ing problem.

I live above a chronic chain smoker. All day long he smokes outside on his balcony and the smell travels straight in my place. This morning I woke up and my living room smelled like a stale cigarette.

I recognize that the dude has every right to smoke on his balcony. Does anyone have any suggestions? Maybe a way to keep the smoke out or a way to present my case to him? The only thing I can think of is to put a fan in the doorway, although that wastes a ton of electricity.

Unfortunately there's not much you can do. Maybe open up all the other windows and leave the patio door closed and then get an ionic breeze. For real though, whatever opening is the largest (balcony door), than that is going to draw in the most air, kindof like a vacuum.

You can go before the condo association and tell them you dilema. Let them know that if it's effecting your condo, it might be effecting others as well. Especially if there's ones for sale in your building. The association doesn't like anything that can harm the saleability of one of their units. They may ban smoking on the balcanies.
At a last resort, you can buy an air ionizer for your place. The ionizer works well.

I would personally go to him first before going to the association. Maybe if you tell him about your situation he will be understanding and accomodate you. Don't just tell him that you don't like the smell, tell him you have allergies or something along those lines. If that fails then take it up with the association. Also, i have allergies and used an ionizer, and the prob i had with it is that it omits another kind of odor, and it is hard to explain the smell, but i didn't much care for it. It was one of those $500. ones that look like a speaker. I don't know about if the ones that Sharper Image sells on TV omits the same kind of smell?

That is a tough one. I would talk to him nicely first, as mick suggested. That might work. Maybe he could smoke outside his front door instead? If he refuses, and it really bugs you, you could go to the association, but I don't know that you can stop someone from smoking on their own balcony . . . Good luck.

Turn your hose on everytime he's out here. Let it drip down ont his patio getting him wet.. He complains to you about your water, you complain about his smoke. Neither of you are responsible for where your smoke/water ends up so your faced with the same dilema.

He obviously has a proble with the way smoke makes his place smell (or maybe his spouse does) thats why he is outside. You now have a common denominator and a position that he understands.

On the other hand, if he is forced out by his spouse and thats the only place he can go to smoke, you are in for a battle.

Man, I like a lot of the suggestions. I would try the direct talk first with the 'severe allergy' story. then, to the assocition and tell them that he represents a direct threat to your health and you want to know what they are going to do about it. More than likely, they will let you move to another condo.

GET AN INDUSTRIAL FAN AND PUT IT ON YOUR BALCONY POINTING STRAIGHT UP, WHEN HE COMES OUT TO SMOKE TURN THAT ***** ON, YOU HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO DO THAT. AND FOR HIS SAKE LETS HOPE HE'S HANGING ON, HE'LL GET THE POINT.

I agree, I would talk to him about it first. Jus tell him ya get sick or something. I mean he's your neighbor and ya gotta live with the dude right ? If you do something wait till he gets all $hitty with ya then let'em have it. But then it's just probally gonna go back and fourth between y'all.
