I'm thinking of starting Aikido in the next few weeks, anybody in here do this?
I used to train in isshyn ryu and kenpo, but after seeing Steven Seagal fight all these years I finally decided to take a shot at his style. I like his style because it's less kicking and more upper body.
I have done it. I did it for 3.5 years and then i left it for boxing. Its fun but some of the techniques are not practicle until u are really good. I get into plenty of fights and have never used anything i learned from it. I still want to go back to it and get my black belt after i finish college. U will enjoy it but the shit segal does is very fake and between what he does and real Akido. He uses fimilar grips and throws but teh striking is off. give it a shot.
hmmmm..... Seagal is a 7th degree black belt I highly doubt he hires body guards. But I know they doctor things for movies. I already know alot of striking moves from the styles I've already learned in. My problem is when I do get in a fight (which hopefully I won't) I am really tall, and have really long arms so as soon as someone gets close it's over for me. I figured since Aikido is more of a defensive style it would teach me how to better defend myself if someone gets close. Correct me if I'm wrong on this.
I found the info on seagal at stevenseagal.com, go to the link that says Aikido master.
Also I was told that Aikido is a form of Ju Jitsu which I've always wanted to learn.

Aikido was derived from jiu jitsu. Segal's striking comes from his studies in the philipino martial arts (silat) and wing chun kung fu.
If you are looking for self defense arts, I would recommend muai thai and ground fighting. Aikido is worthless unless you have been studying for MANY years.
Street fights start in the standing position and 90% of them end up on the ground. Keep this in mind when making your martial arts choice.
I lived with his bodyguard for 3 months. He hires them.
But then again maybe that is smart on his part. Being well known for his fighting style in movies I bet alot of punks try to start fights with him. That could become a big liability for him. I guess it would make sense that he does, but we all know he really doesn't need them!
Segal is technically a MMA practitoner, but not a fighter. He studies Aikido, silat, eskrima, wing chun, and probably some other things. He is definately not a trained fighter though.
HB and I are on the same page. if u want to be a better street fighter take up boxing. thats something i always use. I fight alot and being a boxer fights dont last very long. I would also take up jiu jitsu for the ground game. there are many good martial arts out there.
GIVE ME A BASE BALL BAT AND I'LL BUST SOME ONES HEAD CLEAN OPEN.HOW DO YOU LIKE ME KNOW.LOL
