  • Worst Pain of my Life!!!!

Did some deadlifts yesterday afternoon - first time in a long time for me. I am trying to get back to the basics, ya know? I did a couple sets, and stopped because I felt a twinge in my lower abdomen. Better safe than sorry right? Well I knew I had stressed my back enough already - I could feel that it was going to be sore right away. I did some stretching, drank my shake, and hit the shower.

An hour later the wife and I went out to dinner and it really started to tighten up. When we got home I went up stairs right away and laid face-down on her pilates ball to stretch it out. Out of nowhere I started having the most crippling pain! I couldn't even move - I just laid there flat on the floor. I couldn't even lift my heel off the ground with out excruciating pain in my lower back. Somehow I manage to get up again and find a merely painful position in a chair. It even hurt just walking . . . I've never felt so much pain in my life. Even whiplash didn't hurt like this.

Luckily my wife had some codeine in the medicine cabinet. I took some of that and some naproxin for imflammation. Thank God it doesn't hurt too much just laying down. I doped myself up and went to sleep. Its a little more bearable this morning - still hurts, but at least I can move around. Damn, I think its just the erector muscles - I hope so anyway. I've never had debilitating muscle soreness like this before.

I always try to emphasize using great form, because I've had a couple other injuries over the years. So, I hope it will feel better in the next couple days. I'm not doing anything though until I'm sure. And I'm only taking the naproxin unless I just can't move again.

if u have a bad back (screwed up discs) it's gonna hurt (and u'll make more damage every time) regardless of the form...
take it easy on the dead lifts... i haven't done any in few months now.... last time i did them i had a similar problem... i don't do them anymore...

To my knowledge, the discs in my lower back are ok . . . I have a couple of questionable ones between the scapulae, but that is not close to where my pain is.

Well, I just got off the phone with Dr. T (my dad). It seems that I have a bulging disc. Actually this is the most common back injury, in the most common location. Apparently, what I thought was a strained muscle on my ski trip a month ago, may have been a slightly protruding disc. I took it easy for a month, but these things need 6-8 weeks to fully heal. Deadlifting obviously aggravated the injury. I will likely not have permanent damage, but I am pretty much out of comission for 2 months. I'm kinda depressed about that. I guess I might still be able to do some bench work and maybe some pull-ups/pulldowns, and arms . . .

Anyone else have experience with this injury?
