Interesting handle . . . I'm curious - why choose a disease-causing protein (my understanding of the term) for your name?

    Re: PRION

I did alot of genetics research at purdue university and got caught up in prions. They just interest me and the handle came from playing halo. Your understanding of the term is correct. I actually have a better post about it. Ill go find it.

ok I lied. It was about my old avatar which was a prion. Everyone made fun of it for looking like party favors so I changed it.

The normal protein PRPc is the cellular component that is rearranged during post-translational modification. Thus making it become PRPsc which is the abnormal disease causing protien.

The diseases that prions cause are classified into one main group of pathologies called transmissable spongiform encepalopathies (TSE). These subcategories to name a few are: Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, Varient Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, Mad Cow, Kuru, Scrapies, and Fatal Familial Insomnia.

Even more interesting is the way that some of these are obtained. In cannibal cultures the male is allowed to eat first so usually most of the good muscle tissue is gone and the women and children eat second. Meaning that the women and children are left with mostly CNS (central nervous system) tissue. This has been correlated with the manifestations of Kuru.

Just thought you would like to know.

              Re: PRION

I think it interesting that about half the world's population is immune to prion diseases, indicating that cannibalism was at one time common practice for human ancestors.

Good observatin, however not completly true. There is a humoral response by the body which can keep immunity from happening this may not nessicarly be from the evolutionary by product of cannibalism. There are many other forms of PRPsc that could easily be ingested from heterogenous products. The mode of entry into the brain is also an area of debate. There are several proposed mechanisms however most, if ingested, are broken down in the mouth and GI tract. One strange way is that they can use the parasympathetic "vagus" nerve to get into the CNS. Familial CJD, GSS, and FFI have mean ages of onset ranging from 45-49 years. Meaning that you may have it and not realize it till your 45-49 years down the road. Its quickly progressive from that point

Interesting . . . but I'm sure you've also heard about acheological evidence of human bones from all over the world bearing the marks of early human tools . . . I know it is not conclusive, but it is provocative nonetheless.
