I think it's comming down to the world being too liberal.

Parents nowadays have no concept of "tough love". They really don't understand that it's not a good idea to give their kid anything they want. And not just with food. Teach them the value of a dollar and that they need to work for the nice things in life.

Hell even at 13years old I had to pay for 1/2 the cost of a new bicycle. Took me all summer to save up the $200 I needed by cutting lawns and other odd jobs. When I turned 16, my parents told me flat out "You've got to buy your own car. We'll pay for the 1st year insurance that's it". None of this "Your old enough to drive now, here's your brand new car".

Ed, GG, and Testify - sounds like we all grew up in the same household!

I believe education, education, education is the answer - NO emphasis was put on healthy eating in school and school lunches definitely weren't healthy.

If you look around, there are more and more overweight people now than I think ever before. I see it everyday. My old neighbors were tubby's at 24 years old. My assistant at work is 41 years old, and she's about 240. She's an off the boat Italian. Her entire family is grossly overweight. What's even more sad, she has a 9 year old daughter WHO IS IN A SIZE 16 DRESS ALREADY!!! For her 1st communion, she had to special order her daughters dress on line because no one carries a 16 for a 9 year old. It's very sad. I don't care if an adult wants to be fat. It's your choice. But when your kid is big because you're feeding her Domino's pizza, McDonalds, buffets, etc....., then I see a severe problem with that.

thats also a problem sugar....but i'm taking the opposite point of view. i think these days parents expect too much influence from outside sources. GG said it perfect, they don't know what tough love is. they always take the least path of resistance...try to be friends with their kids and it ruins them. parents are lazy and don't want to go thru tough times with their kids. me personally i don't want the schools teaching my kids ANYTHING except whats in the text books. i don't trust teachers to do anything but that and thats even a stretch for most. some have no business being around kids let alone teach them, so letting them teach my kids any type of values.....i say HELL NO!

Ed, we have had this discussion before - MOST parents aren't a good souce of nutritional information that is why I think we should have a better program in the school systems.

IF parents were proactive enough to CARE about their child's health and LEARN how to eat healthy, we wouldn't have this problem. It IS thier responsibility, but they AREN'T doing it - therefore, encourage them to change, but increase the nutritional curriculum in the schools.

i see your point. but i don't think most teachers are qualified to be doing what they are already doing. when schools teach values it turns into propaganda bullshit and the info givin out isn't correct anyways.. at least in my area from what i've seen. and if what schools are teaching ever conflicts with what i teach my kids then there will be a problem. but your point doesn't apply much to mine if we are talking about just nutrition. i'm gettin carried away. they should just serve healthy food and thats it!

nutrition is science, not a value. Nutrition should be taught with facts.

well there is no reason for people to be nasty bastards in public. but as far as people being extremely over weight, i do feel bad. imagine you had an addiction but instead of being able to cut that "drug" completely out of your life you had to monitor your use FOREVER. try doing that to a heroin addict and see how well they recover. what does really piss me off is the bad eating habits that are past on todays kids simply cause the parents are lazy. especially the girls. when high school gets out these girls walk around with belly shirts on and the fat just hangs out. and they are not obese they just grew up thinking mcdonalds 5 times a week is ok.

This is exactly how I feel. I don't hate on anyone, I have a very good friend that is extremly over weight (about 300 punds)....her daughter was the same way till she had one of the surgurys....but the are both very sweet people. She asks me questions sometimes about exercise and diet...she wants to lose weight, she knows she has a problem....but she simply is not strong enough emotionaly to do it, and I don't think she ever will be. BUT....I LOVE her either way...skinny or fat, she is a wonderful person.
